Thoroughly disappointed. I could have learned everything we discussed in class for free in Nicholson Library, without a grumpy and overbearing prof to take a salary out of my student loans.

A.U. students are oftentimes woefully unprepared for life outside their little religious bubble. Philosophy proper can and should address the crucial issue of how to live and thrive in the real world after graduation, but Professor Reed, in a word, did not. What a shame, because I love philosophy in general.

Comment:
I love philosophy in general, but we all did very little of it in Philosophy class. Notoriously overbearing and grumpy, Reed spent my time and money engaging us all in navel-gazing cliches instead of interesting, rational discussion. Perhaps if I had taken his class on Logic (which I audited and enjoyed), I would have had a better experience.

Awful. Tremendous amounts of time wasted in navel-gazing cliches, and very, very little time spent actually learning anything about philosophy as a discipline, how to do it, how not to do it, etc.

Dr. Reed is a remarkable professor that will challenge you to push your thinking to the limit. This course is discussion-based and is structured very nicely so that you leave with a greater appreciation for different modes of thought. You will benefit from this course only if you choose to do so, however, it may never be the same without Dr. Reed.

4 Courses: Dr. Reed is an amazing mind, as well as an incredible human. I have never been shown so much by a single individual! While many critique his style, it is because they do not fully understand him. He enables the student to discover their own answer and truth, and will not directly provide an ultimate. It's a shame to lose him from AU.

Comment:
Reed's courses tend to leave his students convinced that there is no logical foundation for the things they do, that their endeavors are without justification, and there are no reliable absolutes for the human mind to rely on. Yet those are precisely the issues which real philosophers need to address if they are to be prepared for the real world.

Great class and an incredibly unique professor. Definitely my favorite Liberal Arts class I've taken at AU. Reed fosters a learning community that is unparalleled. Be prepared to see over half the class drop by the end of the semester. But it's worth it.

I will never be the same again. Reed will rock you down to your core, possibly the best prof at AU. The more upper division you take with him the better the class.

discussion unclear, unhelpful in asking academic questions, overall poor teaching. More or less feels entitled to a paycheck for showing up without teaching.

You get out of this class what you put into it. You can sleep through every class if you can read and write well and still get an A, or you can choose to pay attention and involve yourself in this discussion-based class. If you choose the first route you will find it a drag to sit through.

Terrible, terrible teacher. He really just spend 3 hours a week wasting my time. Philosophy sounded like an interesting class to me, but this was very boring. Very difficult online quizzes each week and midterm. For a large part boring readings, and you just talk the whole class, and trust me, thats not as great as it sounds.

Yeah, I took almost all of Reed's classes. Philosophy was my second major. He's really one of only a couple professors I vividly remember from AU. I wouldn't even classify what he does as classroom teaching. It's kind of an interactive team probing of yourself. Of your thought DNA. You learn about yourself more than anything else.

Good Kid. Actually apologized for how worthless and incomplete our understanding of pivotal philosophers was after four years of his/our rambling. The key, reflexive communication. Do nothing, appologize for missing class, and an A you will recieve!

Unless you know how to read between the lines, do not take his classes. If you can, then by all means do. I found his class to be very interesting, motivating, and informative. He will test your beliefs and strengthen them at the same time.

Reed is an intresting peron. Either you love him or you hate him. If you can't take severe scrutiny of your ideas then never sign up for this prof. He will take you ideas and tear them apart so that you have to ensure they are airtight. My interest in Philosophy acctually dropped after taking this class.

if you arent good at forming theories and arguments I would suggest you not take this class. It is a hard course. Reed has been known to make students cry who are sensitive to being singled out. He singles everyone out but if you understand what he is trying to do, you will respect him.
