Comment:
Seems like a nice guy, but pretty terrible at explaining concepts and engaging the class in the material. The exams seemed very foreign to the material covered in class, since it was calculation-heavy and barely any example calculations we demonstrated in lecture.

One of the worst profs i have encountered. It is very hard to learn in this class, mostly just blindly clicking random answers for iclicker participation & randomly guessing on the exams. He puts questions from loncapa on the written response sections.

This guy only read concepts off his powerpoints and did no practice questions to show how to do problems. I had to watch youtube videos to teach myself the material. Only easy part of the class was when he copy pasted some of the questions from the review questions worksheet and put them on the final exam. Don't take him.

His lectures may be boring and occasionally hard to follow but if you go to office hours he is more than willing to re explain a whole topic and will often go over practice questions with you similar to the one you had. His exams are fair and super similar to the practice exams he gives you. If you are good at teaching yourself take it with him!

You can tell Bennet knows the topic but he has no idea how to communicate it to students. He is the most boring prof I have ever had to listen to, and the class doesn't even have a textbook to reference. His lecture notes are so disorganized and hard to understand, especially for someone who has no previous knowledge of organic chemistry.

Lectures are informative if you have a genuine interest in chemistry, but will not help you score in exams. Exam questions mainly consist of calculations, similar to LONCAPA. Overall difficulty is about the same as CHEM121.

Avoid 122 with Bennet like the plague. Horrible lecturing skills - anything that we learned was from the textbook. The most meaningful lecture I got out of this class was the last review day where he FINALLY showed us how to actually do problems (which by the way are the only things you even do on exams in this course!!). Absolute waste of time.

Dr. Bennets enthusiasm of chemistry and his amazing lecturing skills cannot be replicated by just an average professor (Other professors just dont SWEAT knowledge).Lectures are great and actually very productive if youre behind on a T.V. show and need to catch up. Great class to be in as long as youre not enrolled or have to write the exam.

Bennet is not the best lecturer, but he will take the time to explain something to you if you go to office hours, His exams were actually very straight forward and if you go to lecture and can do the loncapa then you will be fine, i had to teach myself quite a bit but the level he expects for the exam isnt much harder than chem 12.

He will not reply your emails. He goes through examples in his PowerPoint, literally just reading through it very fast and that's not helping at all. His test is amazingly hard, he said there is one MC question that only 3 people got right. He just make us go to his lecture by making the iCliker question worth 10%. I'd rather take with another prof

Not a good prof at all. Lectures are not helpful at all when it comes to the midterm. The examples are all on the power point and he talks through it rather than showing it. If you take chem 122 with him, don't expect to be taught by anyone except yourself.

Don't ever take any class with this professor. He will not explain the test material. He forces us to attend his class by making up the iCliker participation mark. I'd rather read the textbook than go to lecture.

Whoever said 122 was easier than 121 was lying. Bennet isn't someone you should take chem with, esp. if you're not that great at chem or simply hate it. His notes are not helpful when it comes to exams. You're better off reading the textbook than attending his classes. Very monotone professor too. A lot of ppl do their own stuff in class I noticed.

This professor is the hardest one in SFU. Just don't take the Chemistry courses with him wait for another term. The class average was about C-/D and his test was the hardest. DON'T TAKE THE CLASS W/ HIM IF YOU WANT TO PASS!

His lectures aren't very helpful. Make sure you read the textbook! Tests are unfairly hard. The content of the course requires a lot of comprehension of mechanisms and processes. He defines and states but does not explain them.

OCHEM is a hard topic but Bennet taught it well. His exams are very fair and are the exact same format as his practice exams so make sure to complete those for plenty of practice. Pulls some questions from problem sets so make sure to familiarize yourself with all the answers. Make sure to understand the mechanisms and do a lot of practice examples

Comment:
OCHEM is HARD. The material in the midterm was straightforward. Things following however, got confusing QUICK. It's no wonder he calls it the "real chemistry." Rxn mechanisms takes tons of practice. The final was difficult, but that is bc the material itself is not easy. Overall, Dr. Bennet lectures well and makes an effort to provide exam hints.
