I had Cohen back in 2003 at JMU. This guy is great, I loved how he cut people down to size when they said something they obviously hadn't thought through. He has a somewhat arrogant tone and even told me I wasn't cut out for a career in philosophy - but I still loved how the guy thought and taught.

He is an excellent teacher, and fair. You have to work and have a knack for philosophy in the first place. Not to be a ****, but in defense of Cohen maybe you complainers arent smart enough in philosophy. It happens. Not everyone is cut out for philosophy.

I went to EVERY class, participated in EVERY discussion, took EXTENSIVE notes, and read EVERY assignment. The tests were ridiculous and he's a very harsh grader. I usually love philosophy. Good thing he's gone.

I'm sorry for the people who can't handle interesting discussions. He rarely even offers his personal opinion, but intstead discusses all options. Class discussions were very enlightening and inclusive. This was a wonderful class and I learned a lot. I highly recommend him, although tests are a little harder than I think they should be.

Dr. Cohen is a great philosophy professor for people who understand that Philosophy is about being wrong alot and challenging your understanding of yourself and the world. Cohen is very thorough, uses great examples and really helps you to think clearly. If your not afraid of being wrong, he's good.

Makes up for any lack of understanding on his part by attacking you.If you propose an opinion that objects to his, he irrationally and staunchly objects to yours.Truly believes that he is irrefutably correct and will assume the worst of his students. Not cut out to be an undergraduate professor.

He def. makes you think, but his tests are too objective for a subjective class. Only his opinions are right, and he'll prob. make fun of you if you speak up in class. However, class is interesting. Overall....dont take him if you can help it, but dont worry if you cant.

This guy is a great teacher! Yeah, his class is a little hard, but you learn sooo much. His tests are really fair too, and the readings are interesting. I would definatly take him if your in college to learn something, but if you just want to breeze through a class and not learn anything, stay away

Andrew Cohen is the best. PHIL270 is a great class. I learned a lot and it wasn't that hard. It was the most interesting class I've taken at JMU. Say what you want about Cohen, but I love the guy.

Grades average in the C area. Tough grader. Just go to class and always do the readings (not hard-- they're interesting) and you can pull of much better. But don't expect to just breeze through. Do the work!! Really challenges beliefs. Makes you a better debater. Discussions will blow your mind!

Arrogant, a**hole! Avoid at all costs. Has absurd opinions he can't back up, but thinks your rational opinions are stupid even with evidence. Tests are too hard and overall Cohen is just a worthless human being.

A good professor. Class discussions are interesting and thought-provoking. He expects you to do the reading and back up your positions logically; he is also not shy about his own opinions. Respects your opinion as long as you can defend it. I liked the GenEd class, took this as an elective for fun.

I think dr. cohen's class was amazing. he didn't teach like a regular gened class so you actually learned something. I highly recommed his class.

I took cohen his very first semester @ JMU. he is a staunch libertarian (i think he calls himself a lib/anarchist). the guy has the personality of a spoiled two year old..but he's well read. not the sharpest tool in the shed, but you will learn from him.

This guy doesn't deserve such bad ratings, I thought he was a great professor, and probably the best discussions I've had since coming to college have been in his class. Just don't try to jump in if you don't know what you're talking about.

He is a good philosophy teacher, but I wouldn't take him, even for a gened class, unless you really like (and are good at) philosophy. Be ready to develop STRONG arguments

Though he is very knowledged about his own opinions, he is not able to offer much about the opposing viewpoints of the philosophers we discusses in class. Tests are very hard though doable with many many hours of studying. Definately not an easy A.
