What a bore. Generally dry lectures, which he seems to end early when he notices people in class are falling asleep. Now and then things get interesting, but don't get your hopes up. He knows his stuff, and his tests are fair but that monotone voice and lack of personality during most lectures doesn't win me over.

I would not recommend den Otter. He is obsessed with Louis Riel, and cares little about other aspects of canadian history. His assignments are pointless, and classes are so BORING. I agree that crickets do chirp in his class!!

I thought it was an excellent format for first year.Made you work,whereas most first year classes tend to be easy to slack off.I needed the research course so went back to do a first year course,and I think the way he doesnt spoon feed everything but makes its perfectly clear what you need to know is a great preperation technique.Just go to class!!

Nice guy, who knows his stuff, but he is soooooooooooooo boring, my head hists the desk at so many points of his class it is insane, you can actually hear the crickets chirping when he teaches. He is a fair marker and gives a good outline for Finals, but if you get bored easily dont go with this guy, seriously. He is like Ben Stein times 10!

Oh My God, Never Take His Class if you want to get your GPA up. He's a terrible grader, and if you have a problem with something he assigns, he will not help you out at all... Avoid at all costs!

After reading previous comments there seems to be mixed reactions to this professor. I am very interested in Canadian History and was very unsatisfied from the knowledge and understanding I gained from his classes. He tends to be rude and unhelpful when requesting assistance. Work as hard as you want, to get an A, you must be a PET!!!

Overall, good prof. Very clear on what he wants in assignments and gives good constructive criticism. Good grader and seems pretty helpful. Notes are easy to take, but he's a little monotone and that makes it not so interesting. Cracks some funny jokes sometimes though. Sweet old man :)

He is a very friendly and helpful man, but sometimes too brief in his answers. He grades fair and a little easy. Class is a little dry and boring but taking notes is easy and clear. I would recommend him as a prof!

In a canadian history course, I expected to learn things other than Louis Riel, but it was obviously the bulk of the course. He is unhelpful and doesn't leave much critique when he passes back work. Tends to mumble, and seems unorganized. Doesn't seem right for first year courses. I don't recommend.

I agree with the previous comments. He is very accommodating and likeable. His marking is fair and his classroom demeanor is easygoing, for he will often share his great sense of humor. Expects that you have your work done and done well, which is to be expected, of course! Demanding but reasonble.

I love Dr. den Otter! He's sweet, helpful, honest, and fair. I worked my ass off for him and I was rewarded. He helped me a lot with my Honours Essay topic. Although he looks a bit uptight, he's actually fun.
