Comment:

Do not take his ecology class. The guy rambles about himself and his grad students the whole time. His tests are multiple choice, but are engineered to fail. Every answer is "A&B", "B&C", "A,B&C, but not D", "all of the above", etc. He thinks the average should be 70% (just passing), meaning he expects half the class to fail. Not helpful.

Comment:

Nice guy, awful professor. Exams are next to impossible. He reads directly from the slides without elaborating on any of the material, but expects you to know the specifics of the material for the test anyway. The class was split between him and Smith, so expectations for the exams were very inconsistent. Smith was okay, Brown was not!

Taught this class with Dr. Smith and on the first test (over Dr. Smith's material) the test avg. was 76%, the second test (over Dr. Brown's material) was a 56%. I studied notes/book for a week prior to first test and got a 95% and did the same for the second test and got a 60%. Avoid taking this class if possible.

Informed us as we started the exam that he would not be answering any questions or clarifying his poorly written test. Didn't matter how much you knew about the material, the exam was testing your ability to decipher what the hell he was asking more than it was any of the relevant subject matter.

This guy is the worst teacher. Not only does he not care if you succeed in his class, he makes it a point to make sure you don't. Lectures are vague and actual exam topics are never discussed, he doesn't care if you know the right info. He is rude, boring, hard to understand, and won't answer questions. Everything a teacher shouldn't be.

I took him for an honors watershed ecology class, and it was AWESOME! If you are at all interested in biology and ecology, especially stream ecology, Dr. Brown will rock your world. He is an authority on those topics, and has written reams of material on the subject.

I just love Dr. Brown's enthusiam for his subject. Read your notes and write down what he says, it will be on the test. I would take any class he offers. highly recommended. Always a smile on his face and he lectures well.

He is rude to students, and thinks he is the smartest person ever. Does not prepare for lecture, and has retarded outlines. Puts questions on the test that he does not cover in lecture. Avoid him if possible.

Comment:

Limnology is challenging and Dr. Brown does leave much of the studying up to the students. He picked a good text and provides chapter outlines though, so not too upset with organization. He has been studying streams for quite a while, so can give a better understanding of the material than you can read in a book. Seems to care about his students.

DON'T TAKE HIS ECOLOGY CLASS!!! HE IS A TERRIBLE TEACHER!! He flashes notes on the overhead for an hour, without enough time for you to even write them down, and rambles about random topics and crayfish while doing it. Do yourself a favor and take the class with someone else.

Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. He is very apathetic; even if you talk to him during his office hours he won't help you, and his tests are very random and don't really test your knowledge of the class material. He could care less if his students do well or learn anything. From what I've heard about POB, this class is not like it at all...
