These ratings make me ill. Sarat is a generous human being and a wonderful professor, one of the finest I've ever had. You know his politics, but he is entirely respectful of other perspectives.

Comment:
Sarat is brilliant and his class is very interesting, but I really wish the grade I was given reflected the amount of work I put into the class. It was extremely difficult to study for exams when he advised to study "everything" even when we had the final. Very good class but I wish Sarat hadn't treated the class like it was the only one we had.

Very entertaining. Bring a computer. Take good notes so studying won't be difficult. Expect to be put on the spot. Don't be a wimp about it, though. Do the readings. Do not say anything in favor of the death penalty. Also, Sarat looks a bit like Will Truman from Will and Grace and Judge Judy put together. It's weird but I'm serious. Check it out.

Social Org is one of those classes everyone at Amherst should take. Very entertaining but eccentric. He is full of himself, but if you know that you're entering the "Austin Show" you'll enjoy the semester. Highly recommend a class with him!

In love with himself. Makes very superficial attempts to "get to know the students" but will make no effort to actually remember who you are. Inapproachable and condescending to those who volunteer information. Does lecture well.

He was an awesome professor. It was worth the class just to see him sprint around the red room. The class may seem harder for people who do not like to participate, because you can count that you will be put on the spot at some point or another. Anyone that has the opportunity NEEDS to take a class with the man.

if you don't like put on the spot, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. his grading system doesn't make much sense, probably because he could care less about grades. he assigns a lot of reading but after a few sessions you'll figure out a way to not do all of it and still get by. he also tends to repeat (translation: shout repeatedly) the important stuff.

Murder wasn't murder, after all. Fabulous class, but beware - the subject is near and dear to his heart - he is strongly ANTI DEATH PENALTY. If you support it, don't let him know this!!! I swear he penalizes you for it if you take a supporting position for it in your essays. Totally whack - considering that the class is named "MURDER". ???

What can I say...Sarat's an awesome prof. I agree with other reviewers that the negative comments come from bitterness. I don't have anything to complain about with Prof Sarat. He graded me fairly and is a friend. Anyone at Amherst has to take a class with him! The reading isn't too bad, either.

totally unfair class. impossible amount of reading if you try to do it (advice: dont) and the reading isnt even necessary for the "test" (10 fill in the blank questions everyone cheats on). this class was fun, but then it started to get to me how unfair we are evaluated. and he gave out a lot of C+s the fall of 05, so dont bank on a B

Intelligent, entertaining and organized. Sarat has a FABULOUS presence and teaching style, and is a nice guy. Only those bitter about not getting an A dislike him, but I honor him for not taking part in grade inflation.

Sarat's celebrity is understandable; he's a brilliant lecturer, and wildly entertaining. He makes a huge lecture class feel smaller, and will remember you if you make yourself memorable.
