Comment:

Not a great time. Extremely slow grader, tests are a mess, and doesn't teach actual C++. Instead he teaches custom classes from a textbook and tests you on them. Take only if its your last option. Quizes are on random days sometimes 3 times a week. Only 3 tests and 3 assigments over the entire semester, no study guides. Doesn't respond to emails.

I was very disappointed by this professor. First day, he said I'm treating this class like a job, and your boss isn't going to help you at your job, so dont come to me asking for help in programming. The class begged for a tutoring session, but that turned out to be worthless(he told our tutor he couldnt help out with example code at all). No book.

It surprises me that he talks to you personally with intention and clarity. When he talks to a class, however, he speaks with warmth, and sometimes the competition got stiff. That's just his job. It ain't nothing personal.

I learned the most about how to program in C++ with Dr. J. He didn't teach me how to do it, but his assignments are what made me good at what I do. If you can pick up the material during lecture, all you need to do to pass the class is be able to program. Trust me, if you didn't get what was going on in 211 and you think Dr. J is the problem with 311, you'd better think again.

If you're a serious student, then this is a great instructor. Expect to be challenged in his courses(perhaps even brutalized, by exams), but it's worth it. Can be a bit smug at times, which can be frustrating when you need help...but still helpful.

Very hard, but a very good teacher. Expects a lot from you but you can expect a lot from him too. Grading is a little on the harsh side and he makes you buy a "Clicker" device for feedback ($40). Other than that, he's good. Besides, your alternative is to take CSCI550 with Renner.

definitely the hardest teacher I had for my first semester, I had no background in C++/java at all. He expects you to know what to do, ****ting your way through the class is not a option! Lectures are hard, but his lab's are helpful, and you can spend a lot of time with him in office hours, IF YOU GO! Most people blow it off, big mistake!

I took Theory of Computing (Finite Automata) with Dr. J and I really got a lot out of his class. He IS NOT a pushover. His grading policy is intimidating and his HW and tests are far from easy. Take this class seriously, a lot of my peers had to take it a second time. He can be very helpful if you approach him (during office hrs) prepared.

He covered for Stapleton for half the semester, terribly. His lecture isn't very helpful. He'll mostly just read his slides, and do an example the wrong way, but then expect you to get it correct on a quiz right afterwards. His style is very unstructured and confusing. I was okay since I knew the stuff before hand. Stapleton is 10 times better.
