Comment:
His ASIA357 course is a fairly enjoyable one. His exams are easy enough and the reading load of 4 to 5 short stories each week is well manageable. For those that feel uncomfortable speaking out in class, he allows weekly journals or a chat during his office hours based on the weekly readings for participation marks. Overall, a very fair professor.

If you attend class and do the readings, you should be okay, but if you don't know at least a little Korean, you'll be lost. He doesn't use the board or any powerpoints or anything, so you have to listen in class and you can't zone out. He is also quite strict. No hat-wearing, cell phones or laptops, no bags on the desks, etc.

I wouldn't take it if I were just looking for an easy course. Short quiz every week to see if you actually done the reading. Bit tough on the paper, but overall fair. Gives out choices of essay topic, so that is good. Lectures tend to be dry and he has a soft voice. But the class is dead silent so that's no problemo. Not an easy class but worth it

Comment:
As a researcher he is one of the best for a prospective Ph.D student. However, his class pretty much requires that you have knowledge of Korean culture/language (the course stating that you don't is essentially a lie). He is also unfortunately disrespectful to his students, fist-bumping those who get As and calling out those who failed. Be aware.

ASIA 347 can be a tough course to get through the semester. Professor Fulton is an old-school lecturer. He doesn't allow electronics and makes people take off their hats. He doesn't use slides but provides weekly class outlines by email the weekend before. Only media was from classmate suggestions and one movie. Midterm and final exam are intense.

this is not a bird course! if you're not willing/able to put in the work, his class will be difficult. HOWEVER, prof fulton is one of the best i've had, and is clearly invested in his students. you will catch his passion for korean literature

I found this prof to be unnecessarily strict and extremely arrogant. Not as good of a prof as he likes to think he is. Makes Korean references in class that are difficult to follow unless you have previous knowledge. Would not take another class with this prof.

Dr Fulton sparked a love for Korean literature that I didn't believe I had within me. Because of him, I've decided to major in Asian Studies. His classes can be a bit dry, but he's a very intelligent man and makes the lectures interesting despite the lack of visual aids. Very helpful and kind, was always there for me when I needed him to.

This course is definitely worth taking; he is very knowledgeable and warm. Kind of shocked at negative reviews below. They probably didn't read assigned books and stories.

I've never rated a prof before as I never really had a need to rant or rave about one. This is a rant.Have taken 3 courses with this prof (they were mandatory). He is so vague about what he wants when it comes to his essays/exams. He makes it seem that he is flexible, but he is NOT. Asks questions to students, picking on them, doesn't cite discussion

Boring. Knowledgeable but boring. Only ever holds any of his classes from 7pm to 10pm. If you don't read the stories or novels you will be totally screwed in this class. Expects a lot from people even when your exhausted.

I am shocked at the positive reviews of this prof. I can safely say that yes, Bruce Fulton really knows his stuff but he is probably the worst teacher I have ever taken a course from. Monotone lectures for 3 hours at a time. Uses zero visual materials. Weekly quizes are virtually impossible to study for. Speaks in Korean cultural references. Awful.

I love this prof, my fav:), really nice, able to make changes for his students, understanding, available for help either in person or e-mail, lot of work to do but easy marker on quizzes and tests, I admit he's a bit of a monotone but I totally recommend taking this course!

His lectures are very dry at times. I wish he could use some visual aids. He never touched the overhead projection once in the classes. I think he focuses too much on history even though many students have not even taken a history course at UBC.
