Comment:
Prof Haynes is very knowledgable about sociology and encourages student engagement. He is very energetic and brings up current issues. He is a little politically opinionated. Gives you a different perspective which is very useful. Is tough on his students because he expects a lot and treats us like adults. Hard but meaningful course.

I have taken him twice, once for SOC1 and again in an upper division Sociology course. He is a really nice guy and it is obvious that he is very passionate about the subject. However, he is extremely unclear about expectations, very inconsistent, unreliable, and impossible to reach. I like him as a person but I would say avoid him at all costs :(

His lectures are the worst parts of my day. Why do I need to know about a specific person's life? It has nothing to do with sociology! Sociology is supposed to be about how society functions and social problems, but it's like he talks about nothing. Hard class, especially the essays. You have to be almost a sociologist to get a good grade.

The class is too hard for an intro class. I think the professor is intelligent, but he never explains things as he just read the slide in class. His voice never gets to the back of the class.

Haynes was an okay professor. He is really out there and says it how it is which can be pretty intimidating. The class was alright, we watched some movies and videos which kept things interesting. He does not post any lecture slides and called out a student for taking pictures of his slides. There is a lot of readings and he will drop pop quizzes.

This class was overall terrible. He's a great person and even better personality but his lectures and assignments are incredibly difficult for an intro class. His lectures are the most disorganized i've ever experienced. Not only does he ban computer note taking but his slides aren't posted anywhere. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. PICK ANY OTHER SOC CLASS.

Grading is done by the TA's so not too bad. Threw in some pop quizzes every once in a while but if you go to class you'd know the material. He does a good job of blending current events with the themes/topics.

. But I really enjoyed the class and although sometimes it could be dry due to frequent powerpoints, I found that Haynes is pretty entertaining and not politically correct. BUT it is a ton of work and especially reading/writing. He's unpredictable, so based on how your respond as a class, sometimes he will do pop quizzes or changes things up.

I took Haynes for SOC1 in Fall Quarter 16. Prof Haynes is literally such a great soc professor, I would highly recommend his class. After I took SOC1 with him, I took Soc theory (SOC100) and I literally never had to study for that class because Haynes made us learn so much theory. Hard class but super rewarding

Never went to class, read 1/2 of assigned textbooks (Communist Manifesto + 1984), saw 1/2 of one of the two documentaries required, took 1 of 2 pop quizzes, still passed with a B. Hard to take notes because he doesn't allow computers but goes too fast to take by hand. What he lectures on is very different from what's on the slides. Take home final.

You must show up to class as powerpoints are not posted online and there are movies/videos that you need to watch to answer some test questions. Grading is tough. Lectures are very interesting. Be sure to understand the assigned readings for pop quizzes and tests!

Comment:
Professor Haynes clearly has a firm grasp on the topic of "Urban Sociology", it's a shame that he is a poor communicator. As many others have said below, his powerpoint lectures are completely useless. He assigned 4 novel-length books in lieu of a textbook and expects your to read it all. 40% of your grade is a "3/4 term exam" with no study guide.

Comment:
While Prof. Haynes is smart, funny, and passionate, his lectures are all over the place and its nearly impossible to write good notes. Most of the readings he assigns have little to do with the course, although it is important to read the books assigned. He fosters interesting discussion between students, a rarity in big lecture classes like this.

Most of the things he covered during lecture were not related to the assignments and did not help in doing well in the class. He also was not helpful at all during his office hours.

Like most students have said, he is fairly disorganized in his teaching/power points (which are practically useless). He mostly talks about black culture (which is fine, but this class is about race, not just black history) and occasionally touches on others. The first (and only) exam was mostly concentrated on the first two books you read.

His lectures are disorganized, and they aren't posted anywhere, and he doesn't allow computers. But, all the information you need is there if you are fast enough to write it down. Generally a nice guy who cares about the subject. Not a bad option, just make sure to at least go over the readings because there are 2-4 pop quizzes during class.

The Professor's power points are unavailable to students but he skips through too quickly to write down the content. Multiple lengthy essays. Final was a 10pg take home essay given a few days before it was due. He complains if students don't visit him during office hours. Threatened to deduct 15 points from final exam grade if you didn't make eye.

I can say this class was way too difficult for an intro class. During lectures, Haynes goes off on random tangents and has no sense of direction for what we are supposed to follow. Tests were difficult and this class is very reading/writing intensive. Too much reading and not enough time. Please avoid this class at all costs if you like your GPA.

Class was very relevant to current issues regarding race, class, and inequality. Very great professor and is clear about what he says. Speaks about all racial issues. Class was easy. 2 essays take home, mid term was written, and final was a take home essay.
