Comment:
Not a terribly difficult class. Memorize what you need to memorize and you'll be fine. I had a 97 average in the class. As for Dr. Tormanen, cool guy. Very open minded and I love how he brings props to class to show the how biochem is applied. Overall, nice guy, helpful class, definitely recommend.

Regardless of who you take Biochemistry with, it's an incredibly difficult and time consuming class. Tormanen knows his stuff and tells you exactly what's on the exams. There's no way to make biochem easy, so stop whining.

Ok first off, his syllabus is his life story. I didn't want to learn about Vietnam, I wanted to learn Chemistry. I cannot count how many times he screwed up in class. SO UNHELPFUL, SO UNAPPROACHABLE! His tests are ridiculous, & there's no homework, so be prepared to have a grade based on just 4 tests! He's arrogant and always strays from the topic

He is THE WORST PROF I have ever had. I had him for chem 132 which is the only class I have ever failed in my life. He assumes that all the students are chemistry majors and is a very smug person. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS. I took 132 again and recieved a B, that should tell you enough about him. I have never disliked anyone more.

first class I ever failed in my life...and yet I learned alot..1/3 if class withdrew..another 1/3 failed...those who passed had chem in hs or jr college or were repeating the class. Fast paced. not easy without a good math background.lots of memorization and formulas. Very fun compared to other lecturers of same class, but not as lenient..hard

I'll start with the strenghts. He is a nice guy, kinda funny. His weaknesses: he cannot teach a bunch of people, not because he is a bad teacher, but because he is so completely unorganized. His tests are insanely difficult, but when you take the ACS final, its so easy compared to his tests which is good.

He is a very nice guy but not that great at teaching. It seems like he is so good at chemistry that he forgets he is teaching a freshman level. He leaves a lot of things out of his lecture calling them "elementary". He is very helpful if you go to his office though. You should pass if you can learn from the book and do well in lab.

Comment:
Dr. Tormanen relies on his students to teach themselves chemistry. He is not helpful and not approachable. As many other students have already stated, he does his best to embarrass students, and does not know how to teach, despite his knowledge of chemistry. He does not give enough time to adequately complete the exams he administers.

The guy really loves Chemistry, but I'm afraid he lacks teaching skills. He does not give/teach adequate material and examples in class to cover the things you need to take away from it. His lectures tend to be full of holes and confusing. Attending class less and reading the book more to teach myself helped me to do better on the exams.

This prof. is very difficult. His examples in lecture are nothing like the test questions. It take him longer to do the problem than he allows for us on the test. He is a very nice guy and funny but not that great at teaching the subject. i would recommened to find another instructor.

He is a nice guy, but a terrible teacher. His lectures don't teach you anything and they don't make any sense. His tests are harder than the homework in the book, and take too long to complete in the time given. I would strongly recommend finding a different teacher.

Hardest prof you will probably ever have in your life. His exams are straight up ridiculous, no matter how much you study if you are not a chemistry genius you will not do well. The only way to do decent is study all the notes (hopefully he wrote them down right), do all the homework problems, go to his office hours, and pray

Terrible professor, learned nothing from him the entire semester and I went to every lecture and read the book.Tests almost impossible to study for. Its almost worth it to not study and get a terrible grade than to put in the hours studying and get the exact same score.

Extremely hard. Loves chemistry but cannot teach it. The only grades for the class come from the hellishly-difficult 4 tests and the Final Exam.

Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Hes a nice guy and knows what hes talking about but is a terrible professor. Problems worked in class are unclear and he expects you to have a calculus/physics background prior to taking the class.I would literally study 20+ per test, read the text and do homework and still feel lost on the exams.

He probabaly is a good chemist but is not a good teacher, he skips difficult topics like anything; rely on his notes and you ll end up in getting a C or worse.

Wow.. this class was the reason i lost sleep this semester. Very challenging course, but mainly because his tests are only 25 questions, and you can always count a couple of questions from left field. Recommend finding a diff. teacher. If not, brace yourself...
