If you are taking Holmes as a first year English I strongly advise against it. She often went on to create assignments as we progressed through the course instead of following the syllabus. Holmes was by far the worst professor of my first year. Other than for first year english this class was a complete waste of my time.

Just not a good teacher. Did not make syllabus until a few weeks in and most assignments were not on it. Updated the syllabus as we went, rather than planning from the beginning of the year. Bought 3 books for the class and only 1 was read, the other two were not discussed. Possibly worst teacher I've had.

Dr. Holmes is the best! I loved this class and learned a lot. She's very helpful during office hours and conferences.

Comment:

Prof. Holmes is a really cute lady who is very enthusiastic about what she does. I've gotten A's on all my papers so she isn't too bad of a grader if you actually try (I've written them the night before). She is very confusing and does not tell you when things are due (always look at the syllabus!!!) She means well but you don't learn anything.

This class is not too hard but I do not recommend taking it with holmes. She lectures all class in a painfully boring way. Her lessons are very sporadic and unorganized. Her lectures have no direction or relevance to the class whatsoever. Her assignments are also very vague. I suggest doing whatever you can to avoid taking a class with holmes.

Learned absolutely nothing in this class. It is all papers, but they are never fully explained and is very judgmental and provides no clarity when you ask questions. This class was frustrating and stressful, takes a Gen ed way too seriously and provided no help on my writing, learned more about writing this semester in my history class.

Professor Holmes is one of the nicest people I've ever met. That being said, she is a tough grader. Her papers are not something you can write the night before and get an A on. She is very scattered with her assignments and lectures, but I really enjoyed the class overall. You will also have to read the books assigned if you want a good grade.

Such a hard grader, takes a mandatory freshman class way too seriously, super liberal and insists on discussing politics in class, has a huge sense of white guilt which she insists on working into all her lesson plans, super annoying, and attendance is mandatory. Gives almost no feedback. I've learned nothing in this class.

I was really scared coming into this class because I am not the best writer but I think she is a pretty leinent grader, granted you have to put in the effort. Class mostly consists of discussions. No tests just essays (5 or 6) but it wasn't that bad because the topics were kind of interesting (sometimes). She is super peppy and sweet. I recommend.

Awful. She grades way too harshly for a mandatory FRESHMAN class. Unclear instructions and if you don't give her exactly what she is looking for you WILL fail the assignment. She might be nice from an outward perspective, but a terrible teacher. SO boring too.

Compared to everyone else's HONS110 experience, mine really wouldn't have been improved had I chosen another professor. You don't learn much. You have short readings everyday and then discuss (with no focus) the ethics of the reading rather than a writing analysis. Believes that a C is average and A is only meant for perfection. Great person though

She's quirky, but sweet! I enjoyed her class. do the reading!! she gives quizzes often with very specific questions. if you talk to her, she can be quite helpful- especially because sometimes her directions aren't clear at all.

She grades papers harshly and is never clear on how she wants essays to be written. She grants extensions depending on the circumstances and she also grants a lot of absences. She's always willing to help and is very nice. You have readings (and discussions on them) every week. We had research papers almost back to back though.

For a 200 level course this class was very demanding. She graded harshly and was unclear to what exactly she expected. The material was boring and the class would drag by bc she pretty much talked to herself for 50 mins. If there is another option I would take that then her.
