Definitely some questions on his tests that were splitting hairs as far as details were concerned. A very enjoyable lecturer who gives a ton of background on myths and gods. He is funny, but the tests are not easy. There is a lot of reading required for this class that is referenced on exams. Don't take this if you are looking for a bird course.

Prof. Brown put me to sleep every class. His lectures cover only a tiny portion of the hundreds of pages of readings assigned. His exams, although you get a cheat sheet, are very, very specific. Each midterm/exam covered roughly 200-300 pages of readings. Definitely would not recommend him.

really charismatic guy who made Friday class not so bad. He posts TA notes online which were all i used to study and did well. some questions are random on tests, reading isn't crucial to getting an A, and pay attention to photos that he uses in slides. attendance isn't mandatory but is very helpful

You can really tell that Prof. Brown is really passionate about this stuff. Do NOT take this class unless you actually have an interest in the historyculture of the ancient greeksromans. The T.A. notes will save your life because of how specific the exams get.

Horrible teacher with tests that cover completely random content that he didn't talk about in class. Horrible course and would never take again. Thought it was going to be a bird course but I was completely wrong. Most random garbage ever.

His soothing voice will put you to sleep. You don't really need to go to class as long as you read the TA notes. Exams are made up of very specific and random Q?s. Caution: this is NOT a bird course!

Cheery professor, and it shows that he loves his work. However, if you are looking for lots of history or war, do not take this. The massive focus on literature and culture was a huge upset, and at times it felt like a ton of history was being glossed over. As for exams, bloody specific, and often times any of the answers seems plausible.

Overall a wonderful, clear, and coherent professor. Just don't expect to have any interaction with him if you don't see him during office hours. He's good with humor, no matter how, umm, queasy it sometimes becomes. Watch out for difficult, even slightly misleading questions on exams.

It is evident that he is passionate about the classics and his own work. However, no matte how hard you study for the exams there will be random questions that you have no recollection of ever coming across. His jokes- well, he tries. Nice man, smart prof, not a great lecturer. Textbooks are rarely used. Course is lecture and (TA note) dependent.

Amazing teacher and fantastic lecturer. I wanted the classes to go longer because his stories were so interesting. No need for book, just study the TA notes and slides. Exam are hard but fair. Will definitly take more course from him

My worst first year course mark wise! Prof is a good guy and pretty funny, however his exams are impossible. No matter how well you're prepared, exam questions are sooo random. TA notes don't really help either. Most of the people walk out of the exam after 15 mins (literally) cuz everyone is guessing!

Exams are super hard. You know when you're studying for an exam, and you read the most insignificant, little, forgettable, useless facts... So you just choose to ignore them to focus on the important stuff thinking "He would NEVER put something this random on an exam." ... Well ALL of his exam questions are on those tiny, random, facts. NOT easy!

Classics 1000 is my easiest course in first year right now. He never uses the textbook, lectures are great, and if you study the material (especially the TA notes), you'll do well on the exams (theres 4 all year = your entire grade). I'm getting an 86.
