Comment:
Professor Demas provided a seamless writing seminar. Her wisdom in the craft lent beautifully to feedback about our work. She inspires discipline, and will keep you busy writing and editing throughout the semester. I was delighted to find that by the end of her class I had a solid portfolio, and publishing experience!

Comment:
Demas believes that one must suffer to be a great writer. Influenced by this philosophy, she provides her students with much suffering. If you want a HEAVILY guided workshop experience, she won't be awful. If you are an experienced work-shopper/want any freedom, fly you fool! (Also thinks realistic fiction is the only good genre. As if.)

Stresses the mechanics of good writing, making us better writers. Get rid of adjectives and adverbs! Not always necessary! Her own writing is excellent: loved "Eleven Stories High." She is tough but she is never rude or unkind. It's true you don't know you how you are doing until the end, but she gives good critiques along the way. Recommend.

Professor Demas can be slightly absent-minded at times but she has really helped me to improve my writing. I love how she made us build up towards writing a good short story by tackling each component of it one at a time. However, she does not grade the work we do each week so it is difficult to determine your actual grade.

I don't understand the complaints about her. She is the best writing instructor I have had and I would take more classes with her if I could. She gets you down to the bare bones of good writing and teaches you how to say more with less. No flowery melodrama, no excessive use of adjectives; tell the story clearly! Take a class with her.

I like her and I think I will get a lot out of her class, but she is tough. You don't know if you are a good writer because she gives only negative comments on your work. A lot of women in my class say this, so I am not alone. We'll see how this goes.

She is not always clear and you wonder how you are doing because of that. She does teach you to write economically, which is important. She will knock the adjectives and adverbs out of you. That is a good thing! I am learning a lot, just not always happily.

Very constructive comments, although leaves you in the dark as to your grade for the whole class. She gets a little out-there at times, but it works. Refers to her own work, but for illustrative purposes and, personally, I never felt pressured to emulate her style. Definitely helps to increase students abilities in various genres.

Corinne's ratings are old; seems like her style has changed a lot! Her criticisms were always incredibly helpful, even when my ego didn't want to hear it. I am a better writer because of her

Carries an awful attitude of "my way or no way." Expect a penalty in your grade if you don't adhere to her preferred style of writing. Uses classes as a venue of self-promotion.

She is definitely intelligent and expects a great deal from her students. However, she can be frustrating at times because she is not listening to the questions, or maybe I was inarticulate. She is a decent teacher, but I was mostly frustrated and I think it was due to personality conflict.

She talks about her own writing far too much and attempts to turn your writing into her style. She's not the most helpful professor and she is a very ambiguous grader...comments are not always sound! She doesn't allow you to explore your writing enough.

I don't agree with her opinions on literature, but at least I understand what she's looking for. Tough grader on written work. Makes the readings accessible while still forcing her students to think.
