Dan does not lecture but wants discussions every class so all learning happens outside the classroom. I did not do much of the readings until exam time and did fine! He offers extra credit on most assignments. He does not have clear cut guidelines as he encourages creativity so if you need direction this is not the class for you!

I took 1900 and 3450 with Dan. One of the best profs at the UofL. If you do the absolute baseline required work, you will get a B+/A-. Show that you have a pulse, and you will get an A or A+. He is very easy going. 3450 had 2 midterms, final, 2 papers (1small, 1big), and blog posts. Go to class, do blogs, do your homework A. EASY A!!!!

Dan is a great prof. if you are looking for freedom. If you want clear cut assignments with no room for doing your own thing then don't go with Dan. In some cases I have felt that I was not learning as much as in other classes, but the way he teaches makes you actually remember things, not just test and forget. He can be spacey. Highly recommend.

I literally know none of my grades right now (after the last day of class) because he doesnt use the Moodle website and doesnt post grades. "Do what you want" is his motto. But we dont know what HE wants; he literally gives you zero direction. AVOID. I refuse to take him ever again. Yes, hes a Yale grad. But that doesnt mean he knows how to teach.

Attendance is worth 5% of your grade. Intelligent (formally taught at Yale) Blogging is worth 20% of your grade

Dan is a great prof. If you need help just ask & he is willing to help. He knows his stuff! That being said he does digress a lot in class and can move too fast for some, but as long as you take good notes & show up you should have no problem. Dan is pretty lax with projects and how he does his marks for class. "Do what you want" means just that.

Great prof! I recommend him to everyone. If anyone can make linguistics fun it's Dan. He is enthusiastic, brilliant, personable, and a pioneer in the constructivist education field. I learnt so much from him.

I thought he was great. He's extremely intelligent. Very funny. His classes dont generally contain material (I dont think they should), but he fills them with class discussions which are good. I actually enjoy attending his class even though i hate writing.

Prof. O'donnel is an amazing teacher! I am a first year student and my major forces me to take an english class. I dread english. After being in this class for even a short time I have completely changed my opinion of English class. He's the man.

Dan is a brilliant man but not a good teacher. He is very hard to follow in lectures and his tests are ridiculous. The good thing is that he is a really easy marker on tests. If you want a decent grade then a class with Dan is good but if you want to learn anything I would avoid him.

He is completely useless. His marking style is set out clearly in the beginning but he doesn't follow it very closely come the end of the semester. The books he chooses are boring and most of the readings have a religious turn in them.

Dan is a good prof - absolutely brilliant. However, he tends to get off topic and will quiz you on seemingly menial details of class lectures. On the plus side, he is reasonable and a fairly easy marker.

AWFUL!! Midterms are alright; gives you practice tests with the exact midterm questions on it, so thats good. But his essays are retarded. He is very unorganized and I HATE his teaching style. He tells us the history of the writings instead of what they are actually about -- were supposed to figure that out ourselves. Lectures are boring too.

Dan is an interesting prof, he is extrememly smart and very helpful but you have to seek him out to get help. He makes class exciting but does cancel a lot and marks VERY slowly. If you are ok with independent learning with some class discussion thrown in he is the perfect proff!

Very nice, friendly man. Very disorganized, terrible prof. He takes forever to mark assignments. At the end of the semester we had over 80% of our grade "up in the air" and had no idea where we stood. He made us do a project proposal and DID NOT HAND IT BACK before the project was due. What's the point of that? I do not recommend his classes.

Dan is a GENIUS!!! He is super knowledgeable in his field and gives great help when asked! On the down side he is very unorganized which is a bummer because I feel you could get much more out the class if he were willing to put more effort into his time management! Very interesting lectures though... would recommend to those willing to work hard!

Do not take english from this man. He is a terrible prof. It took him 36 days to mark one essay. he cancelled more then 2 weeks worth of class. You would likely be just as intelligent if you attended 0 classes vs going to them all as nothing was covered in class that you were tested on. Discussions were irrelivant and unplanned!
