I took 289 and 288 with Garard during the same semester. They were both challenging classes but he makes the content so easy to grasp. He is truly the best professor you will every have and the material is easily retained. Highly recommend taking these courses at SBCC rather than UCSB!

Comment:

Garard teaches the hardest communication classes at SBCC. He's clear about what he wants from you and is ready and willing to support you all the way through. Lots of quizzes, papers, etc but if you show up everyday and show a desire to learn and improve, Garard will be there for you too. Great professor!

Gerard is hands down the best professor I have ever had. His classes are difficult and you must apply yourself, but it is extremely rewarding. The things you learn from his class are also extremely important and are things you will use forever. Highly recommend 289 & 288 but would NOT recommend taking together.

Garard is an amazing professor! He cares more about his students than any other professor I've ever had, but his classes are difficult and he expects a lot. Both classes are totally manageable if you put in the work and seek help from him and the tutor. Don't procrastinate on the research papers:) Can't say enough good things about this man!

While he is a nice guy and his lectures are interesting, he does not follow his grading criteria at all. Even if you do what is asked of you when you do the essays or study his midterm/final review sheet he finds a way to shock you and throw a curveball that you do not expect. Nice guy, inconsistent when it comes to his grading. Good luck.

Prof. Garard is brilliant! When you go to class, you will learn all the information needed in order to succed! Tough grader when it comes to writing, you need to go into detail, but gives great feedback on where you can get better.

Would 100% take again! With his humor, straight forward lectures, outside of class access/help, and interesting course material it made waking up at 8am worth it! There is a good amount of writing and studying involved, but if you come to every class, pay attention, go to the tutor, and actually put in your best effort then you will succeed!

Amazing guy and professor. He really cares about his students and gives great feedback. Not an easy class, a lot of writing outside the class and definitely makes you work for an A. Lectures aren't boring, he's funny, and engaging. Not a class you can procrastinate in if you want to succeed. 10/10 would recommend!!

Best professor I have ever had! If you have any questions ASK FOR HELP. He is always willing to help so go to office hours!! Had him for two semesters and both classes were tough but definitely worth it when I received A's.

Garard is truly AMAZING! His 288/289 classes are difficult but he literally spends the whole semester setting you up to do well for the large paper due at the end. He is caring, his lectures are clear cut, and he explains the material in an understandable way. He's the reason I understand Comm so well now. If you put in time/work you'll be fine!

The lectures are amazing but you are just another student in this class. If you are international - I won't recommend you to take his class. Too much testing and all about the grades, participation has nothing to say (weird because it is a communication class) I have never done this much in a class and I still got a C.

Garard is hands down the best professor at CC. I'm at UCSB now and I have still yet to meet a professor as amazing as he is. The material is hard, but he really does everything he can to make it easy for his students, but do your part too. If you are transferring to UCSB take his 288, 289 classes because the UC profs won't do it nearly as well

I have had Dr. Garard for 2 separate classes and and I feel like he is the "Father of the Communication Lab" everyone adores him and he is absolutely always there for his students. We will miss him when we transfer. He truly prepares you for transferring. Although a tough grader, his classes are doable. You will have to work hard, but its rewarding

I would take these classes multiple times if I could! Major advice: don't let yourself fall behind! These classes are difficult, but only if you aren't willing to put out the effort and time that it takes to do well. Read the textbook, go to lectures, and be ready to dedicate a lot of time writing-you'll be happy you did! Garard is SO GREAT
