Prof. Suchoff get so excited when he is teaching, and when you make a comment he gets even more excited. He is hilarious and fun to have in class. I feel like he's probably the best prof. to take for critical theory.

One of the worst professors I've had at Colby. Unclear about his expectations, scatterbrained, difficult to understand. Unfortunately, his office hours are of little help, as he tries to control the conversation rather than hear your thoughts.

During my time at Colby I took many of his courses, sometimes simply because he was teaching them. One of the best professor I had there--he's a little scatterbrained but genuinely enthusiastic about what he's teaching. An great help in office hours too, especially to get on track with paper expectations.

Comment:
I found the Jane Austen course with Suchoff very tedious. He stuck pretty much to one topic throughout all the novels and never gave us any cultural grounding. If you love Jane Austen, this course will be okay, but if you are not as excited about the material or unfamiliar with it, this course will not raise your enthusiasm.

I adored this class! While I wasn't intrigued by literary theory, Professor Suchoff made it so fun and entertaining to talk about it in class with his enthusiasm towards the subject matter. There was a lot of reading and a few toughly-graded essays, but if you put effort into the class and communicate with him, your grade will reflect that.

He is a really smart and gifted thinker and teacher. He really likes language and identity studies, which is cool some people (I enjoyed it), but if thats not your thing I would think about taking other courses. Very helpful teacher overall!

Comment:
Very much into the "right" way to read a piece of literature. Has lots of theories about structure and literary coding. Class discussions can get very off topic and theoretical, hard for those of us who like more meat-and-potatoes style learning. Runs a disorganized classroom, gets off on tangents. Better one-on-one in office hours.

Suchoff is a real nice guy and seems wicked smart. That having been said, I sometimes felt as though I had just beaten the crap out of myself and betrayed everything I believed in after writing his papers. My God, Beckett sucks.

Suchoff has very specific expectations of style and points to touch on, but as long as you pay attention in class and write the way he says you'll be fine. He's a really nice guy and pretty laid back - always willing to help outside of class. He likes kind of cliche abstract interpretations of the readings, but facilitates class discussions well.

It looks like people who take his upper level classes enjoyed themselves, but do NOT take EN115 with Suchoff. He's terrible. His suggestions for paper improvments never made any sense and I always did worse when I followed them. A nice man, but not very good at getting his ideas across and with very little faith in freshman writers.

Among the few best teachers at Colby. Do not leave Colby without taking his class. It's criminal not to if you're an English major.

The least egotistical teacher I've ever had. Brings tons of enthusiasm and curiosity into class, and is actually interested in learning from student comments and analysis. His classes are mostly based on new critical readings (close readings of texts). The man.
