Comment:

I have taken two classes with professor Barnes and I hold him in the highest regard. He is a geology professor and he expects a LOT from his students. You must attend class and pay attention during lectures. He is very critical of writing style and quality. He helped turn me into a decent scientific paper writer. Tough classes but worth it!

Comment:

Dr. Barnes class is tough but interesting. He seemed preoccupied all the time, so his lectures were slightly jumbled and didn't line up well with the labs. His tests are EXTREMELY hard, mostly because of how he words questions. Field Trip is really fun. He is very willing to explain things, and is a very nice prof., just very tough.

If you do not read you will not pass. Book is absolutely a must buy. Tests are almost completely on book content and almost no lecture info. Have to go to class to get clicker points which is nice because those are easy and actually are considered extra credit towards your exam. The class is difficult but Barnes is fair with grades and tests

Comment:

Barnes is one of the better teachers at western. All that is required in his classes is a desire to learn something and the ability to do so. And because of this, it makes sense that most students wouldn’t like him.

I really enjoyed Dr. Barnes' class. Yes, it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and often hard to understand. However, at the end of the semester I realized that I've never taken more out of a classroom before. He likes to pick on people, but it sure makes you pay more attention to what's going on. He has a very interesting teaching method to say the least :)

The class sounds fun and interesting, but it sure is not. You feel stupid the whole time and you wish you were somewhere else. Make sure you read read read, and dont miss the lectures, and get ready to be humiliated in class, he likes to do that.

Worst class I had at WMU & lowest grade on my transcript. When you ask a question, he refers you to the class website...not and effective teaching method, Barnes! Unclear, obviously not helpful w/questions. Overall, pointless course.
