Comment:
He is a very lazy prof. The assignments were not interesting. He is very annoying about helping students, especially even those who have worked hard all semester. He tries to keep the class hard to keep it's reputation up. The class was not hard once you got over the prof, he makes requirements that are not posted online and just goes from there.

David is a wise scholar who dedicates his time and uses his experience for helping his graduate students to learn independently. His students can always get appointments with him. He read students' work carefully and provides a scientific and useful feedback that raises significantly useful questions. I highly recommend David for graduate students

Assignments range from simple Python programs to User Interface Design. The TA's were nice when I was there, and the grading system for the assignments was easy. The tests were worth a good portion and each question was worth 1% of your grade, so studying for those is definitely a must. Exam is cumulative, and there are required books.

His exams were fair. However, his assignments are horrific. He doesnt explain anything regarding them and is very unclear as to what he really wants. They are marked by himself and we had to submit it over 5 times just to pass.

Extremely abrasive personality, very rude at some points when it's really uncalled for, but besides that, he's one professor who TRULY knows how to TEACH. His presenting methods are spot on and the way he explains things is flawless. Also answers questions very well and challenges you with more questions.

Comment:
Professor is the best in the department, he answers questions with more questions so that you'll think about it and actually learn. Doesn't show it but he really cares about the students. Comes off harsh, but that's just how he is. He's really bad with lower level students though as he tends to scare more of them off.

will give you a lower mark just so the class average stays low. Expect to get a mark lower than you deserve with no explanation at all.

Took more than one class with him, first in the middle of my degree than at the end. I was always one of the best students in the class. One time I asked him a question in his office, and he was extremely rude. On the other hand he knows his stuff.

Not neccisarily the most approachable prof, but not unapproachable. If you do the labs then an A is very easy. Perfects in his 2500 class isn't unheard of.

took intermediate programming with Prof. Calvert summer 2005 and found myself surprised with the response on this page. encouraged student participation in lectures. (he's the kind of prof that a group of us considered inviting for a beer but it didnt happen as we didnt find the time around exam studying- im sticking to that)

I would like to back up the Monkey Boy comment that someone else has written... I remember that! Definitely tough but fair prof - if you fail it's your own fault. Very clear, a little weird, liked him a lot.

He's a great teacher, and just listen to what he says -- don't take his assignments for granted and just believe what he tells you about the workload. People fail because they think they can wing assignments in the last minute.
