Although many in my class weren't a fan of his somewhat disorganized lecture style, I enjoyed it. He is interesting to listen to and is passionate about what he is teaching. He also has a funny somewhat dry sense of humour and will crack jokes. He was very helpful when it came to exam time as well, giving a great review session.

Relies too heavily on lectures, however was very generous in letting us "guess" exam questions in our last lecture

Haglund has a ton of information, but can get distracted. His lectures are good if you are capable of picking out what is the most important information and what is just anecdotal. Explains major concepts quickly. This class was based on only an exam and an essay, which was tougher than other first year classes, but doable.

Halgund's lectures are incredibly confusing and difficult to follow. He's usually behind on schedule and rambles on about random things that you end up writing down and aren't sure if they're important until exam season. We also had to buy a DENSE textbook that you have to read for your tutorials that only cover 30% of the exam. Avoid him.

I found Haglund difficult to follow. He falls weeks behind schedule and does not put information on slides. My notes consist of few real notes, headings, blank spaces and odd points about Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Madonna and Tubby the three legged dog (RIP). I wish there was more lecturing instead of odd tangents - exam is 70% lecture content.

David Haglund by far is the worst first year, introduction to politics professor. He does not care about his students, and spends half the lectures talking about his dog and car. Made us buy the textbook for nothing. Do not take his class

If you are self-motivated, he will help you succeed. Fosters an environment that allows students to think for themselves without forcing his politics on them (a rareity in the social sciences). He is also capable of having a policy relevant conversation without getting lost in pedantic abstract theory. A gem in the Politics Dept at Queen's.

Extremely intelligent professor who knows what he is talking about in detail. Does happen to go on long tangents. If you can differentiate between tangents and important notions in his lectures they make sense, if not, hard to follow. Would recommend if you like International relations and history, if not you will likely not enjoy him.

Probably the worst class I have ever taken in my life. Lectures are all over the place and have no consistency. Slides have no useful information and he never finishes lectures. It's unfortunate that he is teaching a first year course as it is mandatory for POLS students.

His tangents are unbearable. Sometimes he's so far behind that he has to teach multiple lecture in one, yet he can't even do that. Rarely sticks to the slides. Slides are general bullet points with no helpful information. Takes too long to explain even the simplest concepts.

Haglund was a terrible professor. He is very much an old-school professor. He'll very rarely use slides, so you'll have to take notes as he lectures. Seriously it is 2016, and he should update his learning techniques. He also tends to go on tangents a lot. Very unhelpful and strict too !! Do not take any of his classes

An absolutely awful professor. I emailed him once asking for help with an essay as my TA had not been responding to my emails. His response was full on sarcasm, condescending and belittled me to the smallest degree. And worst of all, he offered NO help with my essay and told me i was basically on my own. Avoid his classes at all cost.

Seriously.. what a nightmare! He does seem genuinely nice and it is clear that he enjoys the material. However, his communication skills made me want to cry. I had no idea when I should be taking notes vs. not. His overhead "notes" that he so graciously sent before the exam... useless. And the exam... I felt like I was going to faint....

Prof. Haglund speaks in this mono-tone voice that makes it painful to stay awake in class. However, if you DO pay attention, you will find that the things he shares in lectures are extremely interesting and that his take on various concepts may even be shockingly brilliant. In terms of grades, the TAs are brutal markers and often lack clarity.

His lectures make absolutely no sense. Don't count on his lecture overhead notes, they're just generic bullet points and won't help you at all. He jumps around topic to topic and then personal stories that are irrelevant. Terrible lecturer and his exam is unreasonably difficult with very obscure, randomized questions. Just awful.

Incredibly intelligent and course content was interesting. However, his lectures were all over the place. No way to distinguish content from tangent, no real link to the textbook, and no online resources. Exam was excruciating and too focused on details, not at all accurate demonstration of knowledge. Nice, but too all over the place.

He is really clever and really knows the stuff - but dear god it's impossible not to fall asleep in class; let alone pay attention to the intelligent stuff! (He'll use the textbook lots and isn't a harsh marker). Very friendly & helpful if approached outside of class
