I had Dr. Stebenne for my introductory class to history. He's a nice guy, pretty talkative. He will occasionally go over the class time. In my class he does a great job of facilitating discussion. We did a lot of writing in my class (6 papers over the semester) but he gives good feedback. He's very approachable as well. I would recommend him.

I like him a lot. He's a fountain of knowledge and basically fires information at you for an hour and twenty minutes so be ready to write lots of notes. As long as you take notes you'll be just fine.

He is one of the most knowledgeable and interesting professors I've ever had, and he is basically a living encyclopedia of modern American history. I'm a history major so I never found his lectures boring but others apparently do. Attendance is graded, but the grade is the percentage of days you attended, which is the fairest policy I've ever seen.

Tough to listen to. I was in the class with history majors and they were falling asleep as much as I was. Attendance counts but not for much, then there's only a paper and two exams. I didn't pay much attention and got a B on the first midterm and on the paper. But not worth listening to him drone on. If you have another option, avoid him.

Professor Stebenne know his stuff. But it is all law, and incorporates it HEAVY into all of his classes (took others as well). He refuses to use Carmen, and his "updated powerpoint slides" are nothing. Very difficult to take notes. Avoid if possible.

He is hard but he is the best history professor I have ever had. If you are genuinely interested in history, take his class. His TA's are decent graders. He only has a paper and two examns. Study throughout the quarter and you will get an A. I had him for 565 and 566. Both awesome classes

Prof. Stebenne is one of the best History Professors at Ohio State. If you attend the lectures and don't surf the web while in class, you will be able to get an A. He doesn't really provide much of a study guide for exams besides ID's, but his syllabus lets you know what to expect and he'll tell you. But don't take it if you want an easy A!

A great class and a great teacher if you want to go to law school! I learned so much about the Constitution and the Supreme Court from him. He also teaches at the law school so you know he knows what he's talking about. Great professor!

This class was fascinating! It's not a class you should take if you want to slack off- you have to do the reading and come to lecture. It can be a challenging course but the information he gives is pretty interesting and the exams can be quite fun. His background is in law so he often tells the class interesting tidbits about case law, etc.

Professor Stebenne is very smart and his class discussions are interesting. For this class there's a lot of reading but you don't really have to do it...just skim. The research paper is really in depth but he is not a hard grader and gives a lot of suggestions on your 1st draft. Overall, great teacher. Enjoys his job.

A great class for those interested in the Supreme Court and the law. I'm really confused by the ratings below because I found his lectures to be really interesting. If you're not interested in law, it could become boring I guess. He's a difficult, but fair grader - there were 2 take-home essay exams.

Difficult grader, difficult to get along with; has opaque standards for projects, and basically grades on the basis of how much he likes you.

Decent lectures, but impossible grader. I don't think Stebenne knows what he wants; I went to four office hours and asked tons of questions, did all the reading, and put in 2x as much effort as I have in any other class, but he was still unhelpful and gave me vague comments with low grades. If you can't make a great first impression, watch out.

Last comment is completely untrue;went into Stebs several times for help and offered none whatsoever, just contradictory & vague instructions; very condescending and just not a good teacher; avoid if you can or if interested in American history and dont want someone who plays favs 24-7-365.

One of my favorite profs. I took many classes with him. He really knows his stuff, he's very moderate politically and very fair. He WILL help you write if you take the time. I'll admite he's monotone, but his message is important if you listen. Great preparation for law school.
