I took several classes with him--Shakespeare, Dante, Yeats/Eliot/Auden, Renaissance Poetry... All of them terrific. Well, I actually kind of hated the Dante class because the translation we read was awful, but Dr. Summers was still terrific. He is a GIFT.

Hes a good person but an awful professor. His lectures are rather boring and you will catch yourself falling asleep if not interested in the subject. Make sure to read before each class otherwise you will just sit in silence. Very few grades in the class so always do your best work. Overall you have to work for your grade in this class and try.

The absolute best lecturer! I actually looked forward to going to class to listen to his lectures. A LOT of reading. You will definitely learn a lot, both from him and from the reading. Not a lot of assignments (outside of the reading), but he expects quality for the few he gives. Really enjoyed the class and highly recommend it.

Inspirational, kind, and passionate. Got me to change my major. So many other reviews said this class was hard, but honestly, you just need to participate and know how to work really hard. It's college, what else do you expect?

He had a tendency to go on long rants or he would just put in a movie for half of the 3 hour class. I also seeked help from him multiple times and did not recieve the help I requested. In addition he would give quizes over the reading but he would ask extremely specific questions so although I read every chapter, I failed all of the quizes

Horrible professor. Do not take, particularly if you are a full time student who doesn't have time to read and write thirty or so papers. Heavily reliant on texts which are not explained well, always confuses the dates, and demands way too much work

Phenomenal professor. I'm disappointed that he doesn't teach more classes. Humanities was probably my only exposure to him as a professor. The class was always interesting, always thought-provoking. Yes, he does demand good work out of his students, but would this really be college if he didn't? I will always remember Dr. Summers and his class.

Ok- maybe he's brilliant, but I just hated his class. It was pretty demanding and I took it as an elective. I did love to listen to him lecture though, very great speaker. Tough prof. and boring books...
