Comment:

Instead of going with the norm and using power points to make the information easier to absorb and understand, he rambles at the class without making any connections, ultimately making the class incredibly harder. The midterm and final test you on things he would rush through or spend little time on, making this class incredibly difficult.

Comment:

CMPT 434 is for you if you're interested in computer networks. Assignments were solo and challenging, but you learn a ton while doing them. Derek gave the option to do a group research paper or implementation project. The exams were purely conceptual, so attend and take good notes. Programming is marked in the assignments and project, not the exam.

Excellent prof - disappointed to see him rated as low as he is. Derek is extremely knowledgeable, very approachable and gives fair exams. The course material is definitely challenging and there is a lot of material to get through, but attending class and completing all assignments help. As a bonus, this year the course had a free online textbook.

He has a very comprehensive understanding of everything he teaches, and teaches quite clearly (if quietly) if you show up for class. If you actually care about the subject matter, then Eager is for you. If you just want an easy mark take something else. I personally love his classes and find them to be very fair.

He is a great researcher. He is very helpful for his students. He is little bit less interactive but he is a genius in his area. He has capability to find out the potential from his students. To me he is one of the best supervisor of the world.

Nice, quiet guy, but it is a fairly difficult class. A lot of the assignment questions and lab exam are graded in a right or wrong view - no part marks. He even says the class the midterm average hovers around 55%... however, he's helpful when you ask and his tests are pretty fair, but they seemed to be pretty long.

Assignments and subject matter are pretty boring and tedious. And he's not the most entertaining of lecturers. Work reasonably hard and you'll do well. Many of the things learned in this class carry forward into later years.

His assignments & tests are very hard, when going over our mid-term he said he didn't even know the answer to some of the questions he asked. He talks very quietly, and writes 1/2 what he says on the board, also has no online notes for the class. He is non-existent on the online forum for the class. He also seems to be amused by how hard he is.

Boring letures, just copy his notes on the board with some explanation, sometimes very unclear answers to the students' questions. Boring tests as well. You have to memorize a lot of stuff in order to get a good mark. A fair marker.

Textbook is garbage. The prof knows his stuff, and he's very useful and can explain concepts if oyu ask for help, but in lecture, he can not teach at all.

He is a quiet speaker, but he is a good teacher,and helps outside of the classroom. At this point the younger students are learning that lectures and textbooks are no longer shadowing each other, As a result, He has taken flak for it.This is common in upper year courses which is why you should study both as separate identities.

Derek is a very intelligent man who, once again, cannot teach. He knows his material, but has difficulty conveying it, especially in a class setting. His normal mode of operation is to alternate between writing on the board and staring at his notes. I found myself sleeping through the class, despite my best efforts. Will help you outside of lec.

It was only my interest that made me pass the class with a satisfactory grade. Otherwise, the boring lectures would have done me in. His exams are fair, but the secret to doing well in his class would probably be to just read the text and not really focus on his lectures.
