Strict in a good way. Does not suffer fools and is quick to point them out. A hard but fair marker who provides considerably more constructive feedback than the average Prof... if you can read his handwriting. Knows his stuff and can easily fill a 3-hour lecture with useful information. A+

Very hard grader, but one of the most passionate lecturers I've ever had. If you want a great grade, don't take his class. If you want to actually learn something about writing english papers and understanding Literary Theory, then take McCarthy's class.

a hard-ass, but for all the right reasons. for only the second time in my life, i've found a teacher who will give constructive criticism (few give criticism, but so rarely as directly valuable as McCarthy (or the unnamed other). it's clear that his gruff persona is not out of malice but out of a determination to form the BEST students possible.

Easily my favorite Prof @ Huron & the toughest I have EVER had. Knows his stuff & lectures are facinating. Difficult, but absolutely worth it. I always took whatever he taught regardless of my personal interest at the onset, because I knew it'd be better than anything else on offer. A = practically impossible, but you'll learn more than an A's wort

Agree with everything he says and memorize the passages he takes from readings. eg. "...dissolves, diffuses, dissipates in order to re-create" etc.. You'll be glad you did. On essays simply regurgitate what he says. Hates interpretation. Getting an A is no walk in the park with him. Work your tail off. That's what he wants to see.

McCarthy is the poster child for the typical "ball-buster" teacher. This guy is difficult on every level. His lectures, tests, essays and exams. Dermont is a very smart man and is also very nice. This course is difficult, so ENG majors, don't expect a easy A. Take the B and be thankful you got that

Very intimidating and intense. Don't say stupid things in his class or he will think youre stupid. Do the readings. His view is that not everyone should be in English and his class is a good indicator of who should be and who should be watching Gilmour Girls. Still, lectures are fascinating. A+

How to describe McCarthy? (other than he looks like Sean Connery) Like he said the first class of the semester. "If you don't need this class, you should drop it." The guy is a smart prof. I have met and he knows he is also. His teaching methods aren't that great, go to class and you will pass.

Can't swear, but imagine General Patton -- that's mccarthy. Never have i met someone so high on himself, and still seem to pull it off. You're either with him or against him -- no middle ground. There's a binary for you, you condescending, arrogant ... i digress. Great prof, made me a better person.

Somehow a hard marker AND well-loved. If you're serious about English & work hard he is a guide, a great mentor, stern, wise and wonderful. If you're a lazy ass, he is the righteous scourge that will devour your innards. Both, I think, are strengths.

Absolutely brilliant. Doesn't put up with BS, nor does he give it. A critical but fair marker. Acts like he doesn't care, but is really deeply considerate of his students' opinions and feelings.
