Dr. Wylie is one of the most intelligent and eloquent people I've ever met. The way she speaks is so captivating, it's impossible to get bored in class. Assignments can sometimes be unclear, but they're few and far between, as the workload is mostly reading. She can tell if you've done it and participation counts, so it's not worth skipping.

She's good at generating discussion, but is often obsessed with her own points. Super unhelpful with feedback on papers---she just grades based on how much she likes your paper and if she agrees with your points. Prone to saying random, nonsensical things in discussion that don't make sense?

Her grading criteria is non existent so she gives you whatever grade she feels like. When she assigns papers, she gives you nothing to start out from. Lots of busy work which, according to the syllabus, doesn't count towards anything. I took her because I had to finish my honors section. Biggest mistake I've made at BU

Frustrating. She is quite intelligent and cares a lot about her students, but she seemed to want to explore her own ideas more than teach or further the class's discussion. Assignments were often vague or strange. She wasn't unbearable, but I went out of my way not to take another class with her, let's put it that way.

An incredible woman. Her pro-African stance stems from years living there and experiencing life there in a way few have and her desire to share that with everyone she can. Definitely try to talk one-on-one with her.

Worst Professor I've ever had. I find it difficult to understand how she has gotten this far as a professor. Teaching style and ideas presented in class are irrelevant to book and course objectives.

Professor Wylie is an alright teacher, but she tries to draw really complex and deep meanings from books that just don't make sense to most students. It's easy to get fed up with her strange teaching methods but it's not a very difficult class, she really appreciates people who talk a lot because she tends to invoke a lot of long silences.

Prof. Wylie is one of the nicest, smartest teachers at BU. Her lectures were inspiring, filled with personality and wisdom. She doesn't pretend to know everything, but works so that the students realize historical complexities and make educated judgments on their own. Go to her office hours! Will push you to become a better thinker about the world.

The only professor at BU that I have truly disliked as a teacher (I've disliked some as people). She loves Africa WAY too much, and I can't take anything she says seriously because I assume that it is tainted with her pro-Africa mentality. It's SO frustrating to go to class and feel like you're wasting your time and money. Don't take this class!

She does have favorites, but I was not one and still got a good grade. Extremely intelligent but often aloof almost to the point of rudeness. Loves to share her expertise but isn't always the best at teaching it. Read the novels before reading the textbooks.

I disagree with these people. Prof Wylie isn't a bad person and doesn't seem to play favorites, but her lectures are just awful. They are very unstructured and all she does is talk about her days in Africa... It doesn't help you learn anything though. Every (mandatory) class I go to is a waste of my time.

She doesnt grade by any sort of rubric, she basically just reads and then decides if she likes it or not and bases a grade off of that. She really is intrested in student opinions, and her class covers in depth everything making exams easy. Overall : Good, but opinionated.

horrible... has CLEAR favorites. (many ppl in my class agreed) did not give me great grades papaers, so i asked for help and she pretty much refused. Unlcear about expectations... what she thinks is right, not open to opinions. may be intelligent, but is rude and not a good teacher.
