UGH! The torture this man brings! This is definitely a class you need to be at for every class in order to understand and pass. Your grade basically depends on your test grades so if you don't pass those then you should plan for round two. He has the most dry personality ever and is very condescending. Don't ask questions he'll just snubbed.

Attendance is VERY important if you take this professor. He is a great teacher and knows what he is talking about!! Just know that you will have to put the work in to get the grade you want. Utilize the Math Learning Center and his textbook and this course will be a breeze for you!

This is one of the worst teachers i have ever had in my life. He talks soft and slow and is hard to pay attention to. He just goes word for word from the textbook he wrote, so theres no help in reading the textbook. He will take points of for the worst reason and cannot teach the material well. All he uses is examples. Avoid this professor

Wouldn't recommend Shafer. Attendance is a grade, if caught using your phones, attendance takes a hit, if caught talking too loud or too much attendance takes a hit. Doesn't allow drinks or food. Boring lectures, explains things thoroughly though. Basically treats everyone like high school students. Has a borderline condescending tone on everyone.

Definitely dont take Professor Shafer. Besides being the most boring lectures he gives no help but practice problems. He spends the entire class time spitting formulas at you that he says you should already know. Very unhelpful. He makes everything soooo much more complicated than it needs to be. Do NOT take him.

Shafer doesn't allow any food or drinks, not even water. He loves to ramble and waste time if the lecture ends a little early. He talks to the class as a whole as if you know nothing so, he explains the material thoroughly although it can be a bit tedious.

I signed up to take this course and I lasted one class & dropped it. He was harsh, rude, and obviously a tough professor. He required an ID upon entry and exit to each class. He also deducts your grade if you miss class or are late. He called 2 different people out in a huge class just for DRINKING WATER. He also doesn't allow bathroom breaks. DROP

It was tough but if you read the textbook, it'll help you understand the material. The textbook is also written by him and another professor. He's strict on his rules in the class and a tough grader on the weekly homework. If you follow the instructions in the book and notes, you can easily get a full score on the homework.

HW is weekly and graded harshly (1/6 of grade). Lowest test grade is dropped. I know someone that failed every test, including the final, and passed. Grades for the 3 tests and final were: 35, 50, 55, 65. Thus, massive unspoken curve at the end. 5 points on final grade, maybe more. Instruction is very clear- step by step. Best Teacher Ever.

Mr. Shafer is not really a good professor. He's very monotoned and not good at explaining things. He knows the subject very well but he just doesn't know how to convey it to other people. He has strict rules when it comes to grading and attendance so don't miss, he won't make considerations.

Be aware that Dr. Shafer grades extremely harsh. He has these almost impossible expectations that you won't be able to meet. It literally is either his way or no way. You can't do anything in class, no drinking, no eating, and no bathroom breaks (and forget about being late even for 2 seconds). Also, favoritism and rudeness is pretty prevalent.

AVOID at all cost. Seriously, avoid if you can. This man shows no respect to his students and seem as he has no concern for what's best for them, but rather what he views as correct and fit. While being pig headed and unfair, his lectures are long, attendance is required, and hws are required for everyday. One of the worst prof. at the university.

Homework is the thing that'll kill you in this class. Failed every homework and he doesn't even tell you why. He's very sarcastic and doesn't tolerate anything in class. Would not recommend.

Very sarcastic to lazyabsent students or those that dont understand simple concepts. Cant remember a day that I didnt chuckle several times. Once slapped my desk a few times and even cried- I just couldnt hold it in. HW every week, but its really necessary to learn the material. Step by step instruction. Would take him again if I could.

Rude to students. No food, water-- NOTHING. You can feel confident doing homework and in class, BUT his testsquizzes are completely different. Final is worth 50% but I will say that the past finals he gave for studying were almost identical to his. Overall, stay as far away as you can!!

Dr. Shafer is mainly a good professor. His grading is tough and one of the hardest math profs at UNCC. However, if you work really hard in his class, it is very rewarding in the end. Managed to pass thanks to final exam and was proud of my little C! The guy is a bit stuffy and snobby. Always greeted him but he never responded but he was smart!

I was really looking forward to class when I first came into statistics (I took it in high school and really enjoyed it). I aced two tests and did alright on the home work, but because the final is half the grade, I ended up making a low C in the class. I cant stand this guy at all. Do not take him unless you can ace common finals at his standards.
