Doesn't really seem to even know what he's talking about, says one thing and then marks it wrong later. Rambles. He makes easy topics way too confusing. What could be said with one sentence he takes 45 min to say and just gets confusing. Avoid at all costs

Had the pleasure of taking Prof. Carty's class nearly 20 years ago during my undergrad. Best professor I have ever had the opportunity to learn from. Beware. He does not suffer fools lightly.

Comment:

Latin can be a bit tricky at first. If you put some work in, though, there's no reason that you can't get a fantastic mark. Prof. Carty wants his students to succeed, but he can't do the work for them. Marking (in this course, at least) is incredibly fair and weighted to your advantage. One of my favourite courses, but clearly 100 level.

A very intelligent man, stunningly quick-witted and knowledgeable. Seems to genuinely enjoy Latin, and want you to get it. Unfortunately, the desire doesn't translate to the ability to actually help his students. He tends to assume you've already figured it out from the textbook readings, and spends the class on examples.

Never take his class. His ramblings are so redundant that you can miss classes and he'll still be on the same sentence. Extremely hard marker, Unreasonable even. Avoid at all costss.

First of all, if you're deciding to take Latin, you'll end up having Carty no matter what. This class alone is really hard. On top of that, you'll have a genious for a prof, who doesn't understand everyone else isnt as gifted as him. However, Carty is a gentleman, and will always speak to you, using your sirname. But save yourself: don't take Latin

Ed Carty is nothing short of a brilliant man. His teaching style is old school, but he really gets the job done. If you can't write an essay exam, then obviously don't take this class. But he's definitely a 'professors professor'... He doesn't use textbooks because so many of them either miss the point or are completely wrong.

He is amazingly well educated, and knows the suject matter backward and foreward. His appearance might be interesting to say the least, but he is an amazing prof. If you arent prepared to truly digest and understand the material he is teaching, and would prefer someone who uses powerpoint notes and a textbook, then carty is not for you.

i hated him at first, his work is super hard but if your trying he will help and be understanding. very interesting man and class. id suggest it but you need to work hard and put in the time and attend all classes. he does print off excellent notes.
