Comment:
Vague feedback on papers, poor discussion leader. Very passive aggressive in imposing his political views on his students. Very subjective in his grading and he clearly had favorites. Make sure you do well on the first paper because if you do poorly, poor grades are likely to follow.

Professor Gubar was a really nice guy, he just didn't ask the best discussion questions. He would follow up his own questions with answers that he came up with, and then expect us to respond to his answers. His grading scale was also unclear. You won't know how well you are doing until the end of the semester.

There was lots of reading, but the actual class was really easy to pass. The main thing is to make sure you participate. If you participate, you'll probably get an A.

Gubar is a very good discussion leader, he is very random in his grading. I took a class with him, didnt read any of the material, got B's and C's on the papers but I got an A- in the class and have no idea how. Participation is huge, he likes to be able to close his eyes and recognize your voice.

Lots of reading (about a book a week), but a general knowledge of the subject matter is all you need for discussion. Grade consists of 2 15 page papers on any topic, 2-3 random short writings, an in-class final essay, and participation. Prof wants you to succeed plus pizza at semester's end. Best Honors course, you have to try not to do well.

Gubar's intensive writing class involved a lot of reading but a manageable amount of actual writing. He chose good texts that spanned a variety of topics and interests. This prof will get to know each of his students, so you benefit from showing up to class and speaking up.

I had prof gubar for ideas & experiences II. I found the class to be enjoyable overall. there were times where i felt a little overwhelmed by the reading, but thankfully the majority of it is quite interesting. also, once you get the hang of what he expects, its pretty easy to keep up. the grading consisted of 5 or 6 papers

Took this a couple semesters ago. You need not read the books. I didn't and ended up with an A. His grading is random. He is a good discussion mediator. His accent is as Bostonian as it gets. Take H212 if you liked high school English discussions. Don't take it if you value more constructive education like, say, anything else.

Gubar is a good guy who genuinely cares about both the students and the subject matter. (Our course was about politics and the media.) His class involved a lot of hard work, but my writing has definitely improved as a result -- and, yep, my awareness of the media's effect on society has increased.

Gubar is the man, even if the J-school acts like he doesn't exist sometimes. He is helpful and offers a unique perspective on journalism. The film class is awesome.
