Comment:
Benkov was an ok teacher, definitely knew what she was talking about, but an extremely tough & confusing grader. She does not not use a point scale, rather gives you a letter grade & gives very little feedback on your work unless you ask for it. She also wont remind you of any assignments/papers coming up so be sure to check the syllabus often!

The class itself was phenomenal because the teacher knew the subject SO WELL. She was fantastic at being clear on the topics and hinting at what you need to know for the tests (online, LOTS of time, open notes, I say dont use the net). She was unclear about how thorough to be on the tests so I got docked big time. Other than that, great teacher.

I found her lectures to be offensive. Her tone of voice and occasional cracks at the expense of the lgbt population were clearly aimed at engaging the straight students. Never returns emails and doesn't post grades on Blackboard. Frustrating.

Do the reading (there's a lot), you'll get an A. Essays, oral presentations, MC quizzes and short answer midterms... everything comes directly from readings. Found her to be entertaining and very nice.

I agree with the guy below me. This class sounded incredibly interesting in the description, but the actual class experience was dissapointing. I think she graded me down because she could tell I'm straight in my essays- as ridiculous as it sounds..I've always been an A/A+ english student, and I never got better than a C- on her writing assignments

By far the worst teacher I've ever had at state. Trust me, when a gay guy who's in the top 10% of his class takes gay and lesbian history and hates every moment of it, you know the teacher must be awful. Escape if you can!

Benkov is the worst teacher I have ever had at SDSU. She does not make sense in her lectures, not clear on what she wants out of an assignment, does not return emails and is a complete flake. Do not take her. You will be very disappointed!!!

I really did not think she was a hard grader. I got As on all my papers. The reading is minimal, just some online stuff...her lectures can be a little dry, but very interesting content. She doesn't give away As, so if you expect something for nothing, you will be disappointed. Otherwise, highly recommended!

I liked the professor, she was a little dry w subject material. Lots of Reading, didnt do any of it, got a B+. Worked hard on the 4 essays the night before they were due (except the final). I liked the information but it can be boring at times. I recommend the class.

This course is an exploration of some rather complex adult themes. It requires a desire to take that trip. This professor presents an array of interesting films and allows the students to express their reactions to them. She interested and non-judgemental - whatever your reactions may be. A fine prof!

grade is based on 4+ long papers, and her expectations are unclear. Horrible grader, you CAN'T get an A, and a B is hard. if you are ok with a C then take class--you watch a movie once a week, so you can not go and rent it. DON'T TAKE HER
