He cares about you! He wants you to study well, but also sleep well and have fun studying. He is the most respectable and respectful professor, who will listen to you, appreciate your opinions, ask your critical questions and challenge your beliefs to make you break your wrong assumptions and understand everything more deeply. Very smart and humble

Comment:

He's the best professor I have ever met! I love talking to him so much! He's funny, lovely, humble, knowledgeable, critical and inspiring. He encourages me to study for knowledge, not for grades, and helps me through when I have difficulty in reading and understanding materials. He will spend time explaining things to you until you feel satisfied.

Professor Benz was extremely interesting to listen to. He co-taught my Intro to Modern East Asia class and was in charge of the discussion sections for that class. He had engaging humor and refreshing, modern, and relatable analogies, which really helped me to better understand the content. I would definitely take a class with him in the future.

Prof Benz is the sweetest man. I took his Intro to Modern East Asia which is a very reading dense course, but he is really there to help you through the material. If you struggle in this class just meet with him for office hours. He may ask you some difficult questions but he's a great teacher who, if you put in the work expected, will help you!

Fantastically challenging class. If you want engaging lectures, an intellectual challenge, and a chance to learn a lot, then take a class with Professor Benz. There is a lot of reading, but the texts are rewarding and useful--not busywork. Especially if you are a history major, or interested in government or privilege, you will gain many skills.

Probably the most intelligent teacher I've ever had. He seems to have read everything and remembered it all perfectly, and his comments to papers are very insightful and creative. Amazingly, he's also humble, funny, and very approachable. Reading is rather heavy but well worth the effort.

I perhaps have fallen in love. participation not required, assignments are straightforward.exams and finishing the reading on time is the hardest part of the class. He has the cutest giggle and is probably the most intelligent man at Smith who knows advanced math as well. So nice you will feel ashamed for not knowing everything in the world.
