He's a professor and not a baby sitter! Get over yourselves people. So he's tough; big deal. In my four years at this university he and Comay are the only ones I've truly learned to think with. Rumour has it he's done with teaching; that's too bad.

If you raise your hand to comment, he will challenge you with a few additional questions. He simply does not want to waste classroom time on half-baked chit chat so prepare to defend your comments in class. If you don't do your readings be quiet or stay home. He is loaded with the most unique and brilliant insights into the most dense topics.

I had Fadi as a prof in 1997 & 1998. At that time he was angry but always engrossing. Once he told me that it was obvious I hadn't been reading, the spine of the book was in too good of shape. I guess thats what I get for sitting in the front row! He taught Intro to Phil & Phil & Psychoanalysis at UTM. I'm a therapist now? His influence?

Comment:
Fadi is brilliant. He explains difficult topics and texts in completely accessible ways. He brings no notes to class, has no overheads, yet manages to totally engage students in the material with extremely dynamic & effective lectures. Don't embarrass yourself by raising your hand in class if you have not read the text! He rushes off after class.

Comment:
Fictions of Sexuality: He's a fair marker but played devil's advocate in class & would argue w/students even when he agreed w/them, the purpose being to get us to think critically and learn how to better defend our ideas. Can be arrogant, patronizing & verbose, but he's one of the best profs I've ever had b/c he challenged me to see multiple sides.

Having a discussion with him in class can be intense but thats what you get when your prof is a practicing Psychoanalyst with a PhD in Philosophy. Overall, he is a good guy, he makes those ridiculous SciFi books interesting, and he marks well. Check out his website: http://www3.sympatico.ca/abourihan/

Maybe the comment below has to do with the fact that 1st term marks were handed back today?! The readings for the course are incredible. Delany, Sturgeon, Butler, Russ, Gibson; they're all top notch. And Abou-Rihan is very smart and sometimes really funny.

Comment:
The Fictions of Sexuality is the bane of my existence. I dread going to this seminar. The texts are awful and I want to smack my head on the desk whenever somebody talks. Abou-Rihan tries to initiate intelligent discussion, but often fails. I find this class so incredibley boring that I can't help but think of all the other things I could be doing.

Fadi gives an original presentation on classic scholastic peices that have been typically beaten to death. If you are afraid of the challenge to debate, don't talk in class, but listen very closely and do your readings!

Simplistic lectures dumbed down for students meant that his arguments lacked nuance.

He's a hard marker, but it is possible to get an A+ in his course. He's extremely helpful, but is kind of the 'nutty' professor (missed his own class few times). His insight into psychoanalysis was incredible, although he makes you wrestle independently through the material.
