I cannot say enough good things about Fran. She was tough, but she cares very much for her students. Fran could be persnickety, but this only made me a better writer and student. Easily one of my favorites at MHC, and we have a fantastic psych dept! She's retiring, so work with her while you can!

Comment:

Yes Fran is a hard professor, and no, she won't tell you that you did an amazing job after you have put in 20 hours on the sixth draft of your intro. But she is one of the best professor I have had in MHC in terms of how much you learn in the class. Anyone that says she is bad basically wasn't up for the incredible workload.

Although I found the atmosphere of the class rather intimidating, she was very encouraging in office hours. She has specific guidelines for student writing that helped me, as I was coming from the humanities into the social sciences. Took us all out for coffee at the end of the semester! If you're interested in positive psych, take this class.

I had this professor for a three hour seminar once a week. She wasn't quite clear on what she wanted from the essays. She would say one thing and say another so I would come out of the office more baffled. I was interested in psychology, but thanks to the class I feel a bit down. But I should give psychology with a different professor another shot.

This was a three-hour seminar, and she didn't really use class time efficiently. Class discussions were pretty well led. Readings were so-so but there wasn't too much of it. She's very unclear about what she wants for writing assignments--ask her outside of class and use the writing center. She's very kind and respects everyone in the class.

Gender and domestic labor was definitely worth taking. It's not overwhelming and it's primarily discussion based. There is one research paper in the middle of the semester, so the end of the semester is just fun. I felt the only downside was that we talked about how women do more work than men over and over and over and over....

Fran is scattered-brained but passionate about her work. She can be condescending and overly critical of students' writing. I often felt as though I could not express my own ideas; I had to parrot her thoughts and her words. Even though I excelled in this class, I left discouraged and questioning my pursuit of psychology as a career.

Great discussion-based class (rather than lecture), few notes taken, lots of weekly readings (though very possible to avoid these assignments). High standard for writing, and more direction regarding what she would like to see in a paper would be helpful. Overall a really enjoyable seminar.

She's amazing and hilarious. She's very funny and makes it easy to stay awake in class. If you attend lectures and ask questions on stuff you dont understand, it's pretty much impossible to do poorly.

She is extremely condescending. For someone who is suppossed to be interested in social justice, she doesn't seem to give a crap about helping her students. She is VERY disorganized, and her lectures make no sense. Also, she has no tact, none whatsoever. Don't waste your time.

She knows what she is talking about, but sometimes I think she had her son Eli just so she could do psych experiments on him. Either way, though, the class is very interesting and I learned a lot, though the 8:30 in the morning thing isn't so great.

Interesting and fascinating to watch in a Girl, Interrupted kind of way. McLean may have lost a patient, but Mount Holyoke gained an enthusiastic, scattered, intelligent professor!
