Comment:
Professor Carlin is a good teacher. The material that he covers is pretty difficult but he will go through it step by step if he has to (i.e. when you learn about pointers). Hw and labs are hard but he gives a lot of hints during lecture. I bet a lot of these bad comments are from people who stopped going to class in the middle of the quarter

Comment:
Carlin teaches old-school. Easy grading and gives the best possible grade from 3 grading schemes. Unfortunately, his lectures are mild at best and expects a new program each week in lab report (paper) form. Exams were easy but not worth very much. The workload can get pretty intense, but its fairly easy to get a good grade if you put in the time.

Very professional. Easy if you go to class, he gave extremely clear examples that were almost identical to the homework each week. So if you went to class he always showed you how to do it, making the homework easy. Tests are easy if you know the material. Fair grader.

nice guy boring lectures, monotone voice puts you to sleep. yet the class isnt too awfully difficult, some of the labs can be mind bending but u will get more points on them than u expect. there are 3 midterms and a final which is pretty difficult. but there are 3 grading schemes worked out for the class and u get the best of the three.i got an A

hes good, just do your work and read the required readings, and get help if you need it. he makes it easy for you to get an A, you just have to do the assignments. However, he's also pretty timid, and kinda hermit-like/quiet, so talking to him isn't suggested. the TA are good. "Mock" kicks some serious ass, but i can't vouch for shaomi

Please rate the PROFESSOR, not the subject / your performance. Carlin was extremely fair - he gave you the best grade out of several possible weighting scales. He knows his stuff. The stuff is HARD though. If you pay attention and do the work, it's simple. If you slack off you'll be lost. He is extremely professional and well prepared.

very very boring and useless lectures. THe entire quarter, he basically just rewrote the programs from the textbook to the black board. Projects are very tough and painfully long. Midterms and exams are fair though. The class curve saves you.

Spend a great deal of time preparing lectures. Difficult hw and exams. If you do your work he is fair. Very demanding course work, expect to put a lot of time in this class.

Lectures are difficult to follow. Homework and labs are very challenging. Midterms are alright... a few tricky questions. The class seems extremely hard but in the end he curves a lot i think. I had like a D-C going into the final and after grades were done i had a A-.

Horrible teacher, doesn't know what the heck he is talking about. Unclear, boring, very hard homework and hard tests. VERY time consuming class, try to find another teacher or wait a quarter.

OMG, this guy can't teach. You thought you fail, but you didn't, you'll get like a B at least. But, you'll come out of this class knowing absolutely nothing. Just don't go to class. Hard as projects. It seems like taking 10 unit class with him cause of the work load.

His lectures are pretty boring and his slides are pretty intense-so taking notes is kind of hard (unless he writes on the blackboard). His tests are pretty hard but he curves a lot. Chances are if you think you're doing bad in the class, you aren't. VERY nice guy!

I took this F03. Easy class in terms of assignments. Class lectures tend to be boring unless you're really into it. You can just read the book and get by without going to lecture. He grades easily. Homeworks are important.
