Can't overemphasize the all-around teaching wonder that is Dr. Campbell. He draws you into communication/literary theory. High expectations of students, but rather easy grading. He is enthusiastic, honest, loves learning, & loves teaching well.

Took 295 Intro to the Study of Literature. Campbell is a character. You either love him or hate him. It took me the whole semester to like him. He also seems a bit all over with his teaching but by the end of the course I realized how amazingly well his syllabus was put together.

Very hard professor. This is not an introductory class even if it's called Introduction to Literary Studies. The papers are intense and he grades them pretty harshly. He compares them to his college papers... and he's a darn genius so it's hard to live up to them. But go to him and ask for help and you've got a good change to get a solid B.

Dr Campbell is a truly great teacher; he is never happier than when students are actually learning and making connections. He wants you to get things from the class and he'll go FAR out of his way to help you. Just be open to the class and you'll do well.

Probably the worst English professor at the school ... He knows his stuff, but is awful (I mean AWFUL) at teaching it. You never know what he expects and his grading is non-sensical. Avoid his classes like the plague.

The FSEM: Rock Soul Progressive was the best class I've taken all year. Dr. Campbell is an awesome teacher and really likes music. It could be a bit more organized as a class but I still recommend it to everyone. You don't have to know a lot about the history of music going into the class- believe me you will by the end.

Any man that requires you to read his personal blog as part of the class is a moron. Besides that, he'll fail you if you disagree with his opinions in any of your papers (I learned this half way through the semester, said screw it and gave in).

A mandatory English professor. While blogs and internet stuff might not be everyone's style, if you work at it is quite rewarding in the end.

Don't take his class. We're halfway through the semester and we have only learned ONE of the schools of literary criticism. Take McAllister if you want to get what you pay for.

What an amazing class! Dr. Campbell was very engaging and just made you want to learn everything you could. His class discussions were always intellectually stimulating and fun. He's gone now but he was by far the best professor at UMW. I too regret not taking more classes with him.

A wonderful but regretfully short tour of English literature before 1800. A very rewarding class if you put effort into it. Tests are thought-provoking but not too difficult if you've read the material and been in class. Dr. Campbell is an exemplary professor from whom you stand to learn a great deal.

TAKE ANY AND EVERY ONE OF HIS CLASSES YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON. I am a senior and this is the first class I've taken with him. The feeling of regret is acute. He is fascinating, brilliant and hilarious. Warning: he will use the subject matter to stretch your intellect to every possible degree.

Worst English prof in the department. If you want a class where free-thinking is discouraged, then this is for you. If you're good at being a sponge for Gardner's boring lectures, then this class is for you. However, if you actually enjoy active learning then forget it. Terrible terrible terrible teacher.

Pompous and plays favorites unashamedly. God forbid you should contradict this man. Suck up as much as you can and you'll get an A- (he doesn't like to give A's). He doesn't believe in discourse- merely agreeing with his point of view.Worst...teacher...ever.

Very very challenging, but SO worth it. I learned so much! He is hilarious and cares that all his students are learning. Show up to class, take good notes, and go to the writing center for your papers, and you should do fine!

Class was cool except he's a little obsessed with teen movies. Doesn't make you write anything all semester untill the final paper and half the final, so you just have to guess what he wants, which really sucks.

His intro to film class is awesome. I will never watch a movie the same way again. This class makes me want to be a film major. His tests were really easy if you study hard. However, he gives you EXACTLY what you'll need to do. So if you're willing to memorize a few terms, his test aren'tso bad.

His class is total waste of time. So boring and he plays favorites big time! Info he gives you in class doesn't match the book info on quizzes, etc. If you can avoid this class, do it!!!
