The coursework has a nice flow but the amount of testing is overwhelming. The entire class was writing down exactly what he says during lectures and testing over the material.

Comment:

He does not suffer fools well, and considers most everyone a fool, including other history scholars, supreme court justices, and non-Democrats. Editorializes lectures with political bias and is incredibly rude. Textbook is only used for homework quizzes, exams are over lecture material and duplicate quiz material. Book review project is tough.

Really good teacher, LOVES what he does. In order to pass at all, you need to attend every class and take notes. He talks fast, so I used a recorder on my phone and would go back and fill in the notes I'd miss. Tests are strictly from notes. He uses the books only for weekly quizzes, but the only place you'll find all the right answers is in there

Great personality and very enthusiastic about history. He is extremely knowledgeable and wants you to love what he can teach you. Extremely hard but if you work for it he gives you all the knowledge and tools to succeed! Great teacher! I would take his class again in a heartbeat!

Going into Dr. Battershell's class I had heard that he was difficult and that the class was hard. I had a blast in Western Civ, so much that I signed up for US History I as an elective with him. Be prepared to take notes and study! But the best thing about this class - you will learn a LOT. Can't recommend him high enough!

The man knows his stuff. His lectures are reminiscent of ancient man telling stories around the fire. He goes into great detail while not leaving much out. Students wince when they hear you're taking him but agree that he's the best in his field and knows his stuff. Tests are curved and bonus points are available. Take the book review seriously!!!

He's difficult, but if you pay attention you WILL learn something. In regard to his essays, he cares more about you making an argument rather than simply stating facts. Fantastic professor.

I love Dr. Battershell's class but its not easy! Be prepared to take a TON of notes and really study them. He really knows his stuff and makes history interesting. The more you participate in class the better. He can make you feel dumb at times when you ask a question but the more you speak up the better he grades you on essays because he knows you're paying attention.

An outstanding instructor if you are there to learn. Take lots of notes for this is where the majority of your test material comes from. If accused of "being full of himself" it's only because he knows the facts. By far, the hardest course I've taken and the most enlightening. Prepare to be challenged. Thank you Dr. Battershell.

Smart and open-minded. Not too hung up on rules, he only cares that you learn. Book is virtually unused, but take thorough notes and memorize them as the exams come straight from the lectures. Don't make assertions you cannot support, he will intellectually slaughter you, but with good humor and civility. Not an easy class, but you'll learn much.

I had him for Western Civ and I am curretly taking him in the summer for AR History!I think he is an awesome historian and he knows his stuff! I suggest recording his lectures along with notes and then retype them later that day! It sure helped me tremendously! Plus--u have to want to learn!

I had him three times. He is demanding. I would suggest knowing what you are talking about before trying to make a point. It is important that you not miss a class unless you get someone to tape his lecture for you. Bring a tape recorder when you are in class as well.

very knowledgable, gets off on stories about history not necessarily partaining to the material which are usually interesting but wind up confusing you a bit. better go to class or u r screwed cuz tests come straight from the lecture.
