Dr. LaPointe was a teacher that stated more than was true. He obsessed about one story the whole term and he said that if it was clear you were putting in effort and asked for help you would do well, I did both and did terrible, I tried to ask for help once and he told me that I wasn't trying hard enough. He grades hard and you need to read to pass

I dreaded going to his class every morning. The lectures were so tedious. He also did not care about what students think or feel about his class. He is very one sided and won't accept the fact that literature is up for open interpretation. It can mean ANYTHING! He never responded to my emails either.

Dr. LaPointe expects you to read everything at least twice and usually have a crystal clear understanding of the text before you enter class. If you don't interpret the text as he does, he will let you know. He is respectful to his students though.

Comment:
LaPointe is through and through an "old school" teacher. This can be seen in his grading and his lectures. They can be long, but are insanely helpful. I would never take his class to fulfill a gen-ed but would take them definitely if you are considering the English major. Cool guy, intense reading/quizzes. You get the grade that you work for.

Comment:
Dr. LaPointe is a very intelligent man and very passionate about what he teaches, however his classes are one sided and consist of only lectures. He does not run discussions nor does he really care what the students think. His quizzes are extremely challenging and assigned randomly so you really have to stay on top of your reading. He's difficult.

He has some interesting ideas and stories but his tests and grading are impossible to pass unless you remember every line in the reading. Classes consist of one sided conversations restating exactly what you read and you never know when a quiz will be assigned. When you ask him for help he blows you off unless you are one of his regular students

LaPointe has the best stories and is super passionate about English Literature. However, his quizzes are assigned at random and you have to read basically every class to avoid failing. Yet, i still love his courses and love LaPointe.

He's a very intelligent man. I took quite a bit from his class, but his grading is a little over-the-top. Opt for an easier teacher than him, for it will save you some trouble, I think.

Fantastic professor! So interesting, warm, funny, and smart. He does lecture some, but there is a nice mix of class discussion as well, and what he does say is so interesting that it really sticks with you.

You need to do the reading. Quizzes are random. Quiz questions are either easy or medium. He is a hard essay grader. If you ask, he will take a look at your introduction beforehand and will say whether it is good or not. Participating will help a lot. There is no way one is going to pass his class without reading the material. Often short readings.

I had a very difficult time in his Ireland History class because he lectured for the entire time. He says that class participation is mandatory but doesn't allow anyone to speak but himself. I was very disappointed in his quiz grading skills since many times I had the correct answer and he marked them wrong but refused to change the grade.

He's fair about reading assignment length and content, but gives asinine quizzes that require you to memorize footnotes. Lecture based class (no discussion). Seppuku seems like a better idea every time Conrad or Yeats are mentioned.

Gary LaPointe is the most awful teacher that I have ever had the misfortune of listening to. And when I say listen, I really mean sit there like a zombie trying to throw myself out of the window while he blathers on and on about NOTHING. He refuses to give you an A unless you spew spark notes verbatim.

Gary may have retained the same teaching style he used in the 1970's.While other teachers have progressed, it's as if he has regressed. He is technologically inept, monumentally boring and it is guarenteed that he will keep class going with his incessant chatter that will benefit you minimally and often spills over the class period. In short brutal

Gary has a striking resemblence to the Sultan from Aladin. Although Gary is a jolly and energetic man, he excludes the class from discussion despite claiming in his syllabus that it is necessary. Reading quizzes will require you to read for minute detail and will teach you bad reading skills for your other more insightfull English classes.

Awesome class, though I wish there was more class discussion. His lectures are interesting which makes up for it a bit and he's gives fair work plus he's a good grader. He gives you what you deserve but he's forgiving if you have a bad day.

Such a helpful teacher. Very understanding and will go out of his way (calling him at home, sitting with you after class, etc) to help you out. He's a hard grader but he expect s you to put in the same kind of effort he does. I really enjoyed his class. I'm glad to hear he's still there. And yeah him and Schwartz are a dynamic duo! hysterical.

Dr. LaPointe was my mentor at EC many years ago. He asked me to teach when I was a senior. I'm a college professor myself today because of him. He's a wonderful person and a downright great professor of literature.
