Being that I am Russian myself, I thought I'd really enjoy this class but I was wrong. Marker is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, but his method of teaching was, in my opinion, very dull. Also, you're only graded on attendance, the midterm, a paper, and the final so if you do poorly on any of those, you might be screwed.

As an English major, I have to take two history courses. Since I have been studying the Russian language for 4 years, I figured it would be good to knock out two birds with one stone. I'm not that interested in history, but Prof Marker changed the whole game. He's an amazing lecturer and fair grader. I'm definitely taking him again!

Took HIS 209 with him, figured I would take his other survey course. One of my favorite professors ever. Crystal clear lectures, unbelievable subject mastery, and a genuinely funny man. His stories are great. Supposedly a tough grader, but I would disagree.

2 midterms, but the second he gives you an option to write a paper on a book (really helpful if you didn't do well on the first midterm - not an easy grader) 1 final exam. Knows his stuff and makes the class fun with his silly jokes. It wasn't mandatory to attend but you need to take REALLY GOOD NOTES so I say, go to class!

Professor is very clear in class and teaches the material with enthusiasm and fun. You can read Russian history on Wikipedia to do well in this class. The midterms are essay exams so be prepared to write which may be easier than multiple choice especially with Russian History.

Took this as a DEC and wasn't expecting much before the semester started. I'm an engineering major and I loved every moment of this class. Marker is very nice guy, knows the material well, never puts you to sleep, great sense of humor, and a fair grader. Certainly beat CLL 215 that I was in prior. I wish he taught every DEC class, I'll miss him.

Favorite professor of the semester. The guy is like a walking textbook, knows Russian history like the back of his hand. Taking notes is a must to do well. Fair grader. Worth getting up to take this class.

Good class and prof. There were 2 non cum. exams with 2 essays each (a choice is given), and a short paper based on a novel. Fair grading and fairly engaging lectures. The secondary text and document book are not that necessary if you take good class notes, but I'd recommend them for clarifying material.

Very opinionated. Has students choose their own theses. However, if those theses do not reflect his own opinions which are presented in his lectures, your grade will be affected.

Great lecturer, wonderful professor. The material is not that difficult either. If you want A: don't miss a lecture, take note of everything he say, and you will get an A with no problem. Don't bother buying the textbook, since he gives essay exams based on his lectures. Also, you have at least 2 essay choices on the exams; Exams are NOT cumulat

Prof. Marker is one of the best at SB. I took this class just for the DEC and left with some interesting knowledge of Russian history. Two of the most annoying people possible were in this class however and their outbursts during class made me question "Why, exactly, am I here at 8 am?" Exams are easy and very fair. Essay based.

If you want to know anything about Russia take a class with this professor. He is very knowledgeable and is a good lecturer. Only 3 exams throughout the semester that's it!! As long as you attend lecture and take good notes, you should do well.

he takes attendance... but im not sure what it counts for - if anything. Almost the entire grade is essay based midterms and a final. I found him to be painfully boring and unable to engage the class. He went on talking about a lot of stuff in class that just seemed irrelevant. Take an american history class for the dec

Second class with Marker and his lectures are still amazing. The class is essentially 3 essay tests in class and he is perhaps one of the best at giving a lecture at Stony Brook. Take any class you can with him.
