He's such a funny professor. Plenty of stories to tell. My personal favorite thing is that he hilariously plays along with my sarcasm. He brings bagels and spread (so far thrice). He might cancel some assignments, give deadline extensions, and/or cancel class randomly (but we welcome it). And he grades fairly easily, but offers solid feedback.

I took a total of three classes with Schmidt. A very gentle, intelligent and generous prof. Great lectures and insights. More likely for a deer to kill him than for him to ever kill a deer. Every English major needs to take him at least once. Has a real mentoring/pastoral attitude to his work.

I haven't skipped his class because I honestly LOVE going. It's my earliest class this semester (8:35 versus 10:30 the other days), but I look forward to it because Professor Schmidt is simply hilarious. He tells good stories, his lectures are interesting, and he occasionally cancels class and frequently changes or cancels assignments. Great prof

Schmidt is the greatest professor I've ever had, I had him for both Chaucer and Teaching Lit. If you can, I highly, HIGHLY recommend taking him for Chaucer. The man is so passionate about the subject. He is honestly the greatest. He genuinely cares about each of his students.

Schmidt is a fabulous professor. He teaches higher level courses - people in 100 levels won't have him, but he is awesome. Class discussions are energetic and engaging. If you love literature, Schmidt is your man--he practically exudes joy and delight for literature. If you only do the work to get by, you are missing so much that he has to offer.

If you have a chance to take a course with Schmidt, take it (makes Calvin's exorbitant tuition more than worth it)

Lit with Schmidt= Fantastic. I learned a lot from a literary master, who happened to be a great grader and a fantastic in-class storyteller. Take children's lit even if it isn't in your major. British lit is also fantastic with this guy!!! SO GOOD DOH!!!

My favorite Calvin professor. Schmidt's classes remind me why I'm an English major. He's a pretty hard grader, but the class is definitely worth it. It will NOT be boring!

Professor Schmidt is a good prof, but don't expect to get any hellos on the path or anything. Great ability to teach...not so much in the ability to be socially normal...

Amazing and hilarious prof! Loves what he's teaching, which makes you love the subject too. Tells funny stories that actually relate (mostly) to what he's teaching. Easy grader if you're English-minded. Do the loads of reading because it pays off just listening to how he talks about the texts and their era, and then applies it to today. Loved him!

Children's Lit with Gary Schmidt may be the best class calvin offers. VERY interesting. He reads you kids books and makes you think about writing and getting published yourself (i had never thougt about it before this class). There are reading assignments but you dont have to do them. I didnt open the book until the midterm. Easy & interesting

I don't think I've ever met anyone quite like Gary Schmidt, but this was, hands down, one of the best classes I've ever had. Grades tough, but his class is worth it. Very unique sense of humor that is entirely his own. Hilarious. Wonderful storyteller. Great guy. Take his class!!

He is so hilarious. Talked about movies alot. Very hard grader, but not that much homework. You don't have to do the reading, because he never even mentions it. Very funny and random though!
