Really caring prof, lectures are interesting but not mandatory. No textbook, he instead suggests a list of readings for each week and you can pick which one to do study notes on. Critical book review and final paper worth 40% and 50% respectively, so get ready to write. Only take the class if you have a really interest in the subject.

75 questions about Capital assignment, was the most challenging thing I had to do in my undergrad and everyone in the class did poorly on it. His grading for it also made no sense, wish I had talked to others in the class so we could challenge him on it. Other than that he is very good at explaining concepts. 20 page final paper.

Lectures are dry, in my opinion. He seems genuinely caring about the subject and making sure students get a good grade. I was behind on work and he allowed me to hand it in, so I received a good grade in the end.

Gary is one of a kind. His lectures aren't mandatory, but we attend anyway because of how engaging he is. This is a man of knowledge and experience. He has such a cool way about him too, a sense of ease. He explains the most complex of systems in concise and easy to understand terms- true intelligence. Super approachable and caring. Recommend!

Amazingly insightful, passionate about his topic, clear and responsive. It really helps if you have an interest in the course topic - you'll garner a lot more from the class than the credits.

Really interesting course - not a ton of room for discussion though Gary is fairly encouraging. Very knowledgeable and approachable. Quite a bit of reading, as weekly study notes are required throughout the semester. Final paper is open-ended and worth a lot. Good writing skills are a must.

Loved the prof, not the subject. I am not a fan of reading Marx. I like listening Teeple talk about him more :). However, I found that not having a ppt to look at made the class quite dry. I wish we were allowed to discuss Marx rather than just sit and listen.

Gary is very interested in the subject and he basically lectures the whole four hours. There are no ppt, so it may be hard to follow. Basically you have a term essay (40%), final essay (50%), and study notes (10%). It wasn't mandatory to attend his class because the essays that you will be writing is based off from the selection of books he chose

Comment:
Be careful reading some of these comments. They are vague and rambling. Using words like not valid (invalid?), not sound (unsound?), biased, illogical, etc., in a sentence does not turn your opinion into an argument. If you want to be an academic, then learn what a premise, inference and conclusion actually is.

Comment:
Be careful learning Gary's material. His premises are not valid and his conclusions are not sound. His presentation and style is good, but please pay attention and you will find that he reaches conclusions that are illogical and biased. If you want to be an academic, then it is difficult to digest everything Gary feeds you.

Utter Genius. Tremendous ability to communicate abstract thought to ants. Inspired me to pursue academia. Has so many sources backing his Marxism that he's near impossible to refute. Interested in helping his students' intellectual development. It saddens me to think of future Soc students when he retires. Gary is irreplaceable. Best prof ever.

Really nice, easygoing guy. I like the way he has us choose our own readings from the library. Yes, some statements he makes in 325 are difficult to credit, but he tells you from the beginning that the lectures he presents are an argument, not "the truth." I learned a lot from these classes and would take another class with him.

He knows a lot about the subject and was interesting. I didn't like that there was no text and instead journal articles or books that we had to choose from the list, find, and read each week and do study notes on. Also, there was no final so as long as you were there for enough classes to be able to write the two essays it seemed pointless for me.

Great introductory course to volume 1 of Capital. 2 papers and chapter questions are requirements. He gives you notes and summary of all chapters in the book so you don't have to read it and in lectures he answers the chapter questions so you just copy them. 1 midterm paper (10 pages) and final paper (15 pages) and your good! Nicest prof i've had

Be careful of taking this class. His teachings are insidiously totalitarian: he presents only one view; he does not encourage debate; his marking is arbitrary; and there is a high level of student apathy in the class- only half the students ever attended his lectures.

Genuinely interested in the intellectual growth of his students. Incredibly kind, humble and engaging. He has inspired me to continue to engage with the dominant discourse in a critical way. As well, his concepts have allowed me to find meaning by connecting to the infinite subjectivity of the human spirit. Also, he has lovely shoes.

Comment:
Do not take this class if you're interested in expanding your mind beyond marxists theories. He does not present a balance approach, nor does he offer credible support for the maxist theories he holds. I felt sorry for the people in my class who were being brainwashed to think in such a narrow view. Teeple is bitter of politics, and it shows.
