One of the best professors at UBC. He is eloquent and his lectures are incredibly engaging. He provides the notes to you, but don't miss class. The exams are straightforward and based on the notes. Very light amount of homework/readings and a great course to take if you're taking a heavier course load. I looked forward to his class every week!

Perhaps, the best prof I have ever had in my academic career. Very knowledgeable, extremely intelligent, incredibly engaging, exceptionally eloquent and with a great sense of humour, Geoffrey made his lectures worthy to wake up for at 7 in the morning. Would have definitely taken GERM 305 with him (or any other class really) if I wasn't graduating.

By far the best Prof I have had so far at UBC, however I did only take this course in my first year at the school. Professor Young is highly intelligent and his lectures are both interesting and well constructed.

Geoffrey is no doubt brilliant- just listening to him talk can improve your writing. The only thing I disliked about this class was how difficult the exams were. I guess his literature classes are easier, but German 305 was harder. But I still learned a lot.

Decided to take this class after seeing all the raving reviews about him. Turned out to be a huge mistake. He gives off the appearance of being profound while in actuality only has a mediocre intellect. Forces you to come to every class and write down every word he says. Never gives clear expectations on essays. British accent is annoying.

I have recommended this prof to everyone I know. He is absolutely amazing! His lectures are so interesting, and made a topic that could have easily been boring (German lit from 1900-1945) fascinating. This was one of the only classes that I actually looked forward to each week. If I weren't graduating, I'd take more classes with him!

Without a doubt one of the best professors (smartest, most interesting) at UBC. Do yourself a favour and take one or three of his classes whenever they are offered. And don't skip the lectures! Key to getting good grade in his class.

He is a great lecturer that engages you with the material. Crystal clear and also really witty. Be prepared to go to class and take down everything he says because you will be graded on it. However, he can be condescending towards students, and will ask you questions just so you can get it wrong. But overall this class is really interesting.

Isnt a good prof at all. His voice is monotone and makes the class boring. Definitely regret this class.

Gifted lecturer, insightful analyses of texts. Just to sit in his classes and to take it all in may be one of the best things in UBC.

I took Vikings and Norse Mythology with Dr. Winthrop-Young, and I wish I could take it every year until I've memorised it. The class ranged from Icelandic sagas to Beowulf, Grimm's law, philologists, Tolkien, and Viking metal - the whole lot. And Dr. Young knits it all together in a way that'll have you sprinting to get to class.

BRILLIANT! If you need to do your lit requirement, take his class! No papers, just two midterms (20 very short answer questions, 1 essay) and a final. He is funny, super helpful and very clear in the structure of his course. I almost wish I was in his department to have an excuse to take more classes with him.

If you have the opportunity to take a GWY class, DO IT. He's the best prof I've had at UBC by a long shot. Had no interest/background in the subject matter before the class, and loved his course SO much that I'm now considering a minor in German Studies. Spend your electives here for sure. Brilliant man, fascinating to listen to, easy to do well!

He came highly recommended from three of my friends and is now definitely one of my favourite profs. He had so many interesting references from so many fields that I found myself even more engaged with the materials than I expected to be. Wonderful teacher and interesting person.

As many have said he is probably one of the best professors in all of UBC. Brilliant beyond words and passionate about the subject, which is infectious to his students. I've taken 3 classes with him so far and it just gets better and better. Put it on your to-do list before leaving UBC.

Go to class. Bring a laptop. He covers a lot of material in a short amount of time, and he will test on any and all of it. That being said, he is the best prof I have had at UBC so far. If you go to class and pay attention, you will do well. He knows his stuff and can make even the dullest material exhilarating.

Easy course, generally kind prof. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE DETAILED NOTES. And you will likely get As. However, he has his flaws. Going again the grain of hero-worship, I'm going to have to agree with the sometimes-condescending remark. Dismissing this complaint as "British Humour" is not helpful/relevant, either (and is condescending in itself).

I'm very "happy" (you'll get that if you take his class) with this prof. Not a fan of lit at all, but I largely enjoy his classes. Brilliant social anthropologist. Interesting lectures thankfully free of the awkward, prodded discussion that most lit classes bring. Easy exams. What might seem condescending = British humour, learn to appreciate it.
