He's a good teacher and it's a shame he's retiring, I was hoping he'd teach functional analysis one more time. He's arguably too rigorous; it can limit the breadth of material he can cover. Still, one of my favorite mathematics professors ever. The calculus brats maligning him have no idea what a fantastic teacher and mathematician this man is.

Fantastic professor, his class is very rigorous and very straightforward. He is an excellent topological group theorist and his topology courses have a bent towards topological groups. Note that everyone trashing him is in 201 or below. He's the type of professor people who don't like math hate, because he's a consummate mathematician.

I feel bad because I think he means well, but he is a horrible professor. All he does is write theorems and proofs and doesn't explain them well. He doesn't understand the questions asked by people in the class. Don't take him. The only good thing is that a 50 on tests is passing in his class.

People have been so unfair Dr.Itzkowitz here.Yes,he IS a hardass with the grades and is extremely demanding.YES,he's sometimes not the most sensitive guy in the world.But that's because he has VERY high standards.If he sees you're making an effort and come to his office,he's VERY helpful.SERIOUS math majors and the grad students only need apply.

Itzkowitz made me realize how important definitions and rigorous proofs are in mathematics. He is a great professor. All the prevoius comments have no basis. If you have something to complain about, then go visit another department.

Smart man but definitely CANNOT teach! Took many days off for the holidays & held the class during free hour (not fair for people who work at that time). Instead of helping he would say that most people fail the class the first time around.

Advanced Calculus is a hard class. With Itzkowitz it was that much harder. Maze of impenetrable, copious notes. A few hand-in assignments; credit given for putting HW up on blackboard. 3 exams + Final. He is gifted in math but not in teaching; he is in his own little world. Does write out full, correct solutions on tests when you get one wrong.

I agree with the previous comments. Unless you have adequate knowledge of the subject...you will most likely not do well. He does not explain thoroughly, atleast in my opinion. I have studied and worked hard in order to pass his class...but I'm still waiting in purgatory for my cal grade...
