Arbitrary and unclear in his grading - exactly what a professor of poetry should NOT be. Frustrating professor.

Had him for Poetry From the Inside. class was pretty basic discussion format- 50% of the grade is participation, 50% final portfolio. he gives you exact instructions for each poem (only 6), then annotates them and gives you a chance to fix them. very nice, not a hard class if you just follow his instructions.

nice man...bad teacher. Often treats poetry and art like it is math. Often poor taste in writing. Disappointing overall.

Dr. Allen is a nice man, and he's very helpful throughout the term. I don't enjoy poetry, but ended up making a great grade in the class. It's very subjective however, and his opinions in writing are sometimes frustrating. Not bad, but if another prof. is easier...take them.

Have an essay (only 500-750 words) and a poem due every two weeks. Doesn't give grades til end of term. Tells you how to correct essays. Nice guy. Discuss poetry all day. Fairly easy. I definately suggest taking him.

Very easy A. An interest in poety isn't necessary, you just have to act interested in the discussions. The five essays are never more than 750 words, and he tells you EXACTLY what to do to correct them. I highly recommend this professor for the English 11 GER, it will be one of your first (and only!) high A's at Furman.

He is very quiet and soft spoken. His essay assignments are obscure and difficult and do not relate to anything talked about during class. I heard he is good in his writing poetry and fiction classes, but don't take modern British/American poetry.

Dr. Allen teaches the way teachers should. He allows you to grow and learn on your own while providing constructive comments. He's quiet, but funny. I'd take him again in a heartbeat. He loves his subject.

He is very weird and kind of quite but he is an overall nice guy. I absolutly hate poetry but I still pulled off a B+. Do the classwork, its easy and you get a higher participation grade if you take it seriously. He is always willing to help if you have questions about your paper and schedule a conference.

I've always been a good student - good listener, very interested, hard worker - Allen held me after class and told me I was the most disrespectful student he'd ever had. He had an obvious favorite in the class, and obviously, I was not that student. He wasn't clear about his expectations, but he loved to cover my writings with red ink. I know Eng 11 is required, but maybe there's another teacher for this course.

Dr. Allen is quiet, but if you put in the energy--participate in class and be thoughtful of what he and other students say--you'll get a good grade. He'll even give a 100 for participation if you say just one thing each day. He's kind and helpful--READ the comments on your returned papers!

Horrible professor. At mid-point, when I asked him what I could to do bring my grade up from a b to an a, he basically told me I couldn't, and said that "some people just weren't meant to write." Stay away.

pretty easy work load. fairly easy grader, but can be picky. if you put minimal effort in, you should get at least a C. Some effort: B. a lot of effort wil get you an A. Definitely a weird guy--really shy. not helpful with individual conferences.
