I took this class in Spring 2009. I got easy A's in HSS1-HSS3 with other professors, but I had to work my butt off with this one to get a B. She is a fair grader and she expects high quality papers. This course essentially taught me how to write, and consequently how to be a better communicator in the working world.

People complaining about her being cocky need to now their place. She's a teacher and you're a student - end of story. You're not on vacation so humble yourself and do the work, you'll guarantee to not only pass but get an exceptionally fair grade, the attention you need and maybe even learn something.

Gwen Hyman was a tough as nails professor, but she taught me invaluable tools to write well. She questioned my assumptions, pushed me harder than any other professor. She seemed to genuinely care about the readings and my learning. She was a hard grader, but her encouragement pushed me beyond my limitations. I took 2 classes with her....

Incredible teacher. Absolutely amazing, yes the work might kill you, yes she pushes you to the max...but hey this is Cooper Union, you didn't come here to read Dr. Suess. She may be a hard grader - but in the end its all worth it. Anyone who hasn't taken her or feels like that because of the superstar they were in high school, has no right to rate

I have never disliked a teacher more. Went above and beyond being a hard-ass and into the realm of verbal abuse. Sure I was not a model student, and had I spent more time in college sober I would have had the brain cells to conquer her assignments, but this woman was exceptionally unpleasant and smug.

Many negative comments on her seem to stem from people who either haven't had her or don't like doing work (lazy? I won't judge). Absolutely thorough knowledge of her material and an excellent ability to get you involved make any class she gives worth taking. You will read some good books and learn how to write - an important asset in any field.

There are a lot of people leaving negative comments that haven't had her as a professor. It definitely is a class that will challenge you (even more than other HSS classes). But it is also very interesting and she is great and presenting the material. She pushes her class, sometimes too much. If you grew up loving to read, take this class.

What's the deal with her attitude? She's so ornery and pugnacious all the time. She just walks in there like she's the pope of writing or someting and explains why she's right and your wrong before she even hears your opinion. I've never had her for class, but she really seems to have a bad attitude and I think it's a good idea to avoid her.

Awesome! The most engaging professor I've ever had. The 3 hour class went by in 10 minutes. She is a hard-ass, lots of work, not an easy grader, but it was totally worth it for the class discussions. She is very helpful outside of class. When I was strugging, she spent HOURS helping me.

Didnt have her as a teacher but i hate her. Huge ego - thinks she's the best and she's quite condescending. Tends to think engineers dont know anything about literature and history. The "B" word describes her well. I imagine she'd bring those personality traits into her classes so avoid her.

Harder than most humanities professors, but a great teacher. She keeps me awake in class and I love her enthusiasm and passion for every class I've had with her. Tough grader but always there for help.
