There is this term used in psychology called "learned helplessness," and I think it applies here. It doesn't matter how or what you study, you will fail the exams. He expects nothing less than mastery of biochemistry or omniscience, despite all the fluffy "you only need to know the ESSENTIALS" nonsense he says in lecture.

He is absolutely ridiculous. His expectations of students are way to high. Sure it's a 500 level class but how is someone going to test you on material he A) didn't cover or B) isn't even in the text. "You are responsible for everything" Worse teacher ever. Avoid him like the plague!

This is undoubtedly the hardest B+/A- I have probably ever worked for in my undergraduate career. Dr. White is a nice guy, and is really interested in chemistry. Very stubborn, and is often confrontational when students tell him that his exam wording is vague and open to interpretation. Exams are DEATH. Avg is usually around a low 50 / high 40.

I was really looking forward to taking this class & have a great interest in biochem, but his structure of the class/teaching methods are terrible. Thoroughly reading the textbook/taking detailed notes doesn't help either. He assumes you have a perfect knowledge of calc/chem/bio & spend all of your time on his class. Bad grade = inevitable.

Had the hardest tests I've ever had in college in this class. I'm a science student with GPA of 3.7. Tests are EXTREMELY hard. 99% of the contents are not covered in class. Have to read the whole book VERY carefully to be able to answer questions.

The people with low ratings are poor, disinterested, ignorant students. Hal is not lazy. He puts more effort into this class than i've ever seen. I had a terrible group, and i learned way way more because i had to teach the other people which increases understanding. Very knowledgeable, insanely helpful, brilliantly constructed class.

PBL is a great way of learning. It's hard and you'll work your butt off for an A, but it's worth it. Once you're out of undergrad., there's no professors with answers for you anymore and you're on your own. PBL prepares you for this.

Hal is a knowledgable person but i don't like his way of teaching. If you ask a question he will never directly give an answer. class definitely is work a lot of stuff is learned on your own. Not an easy A at all. B is pretty easy to get.

It's hard to rate Dr. White. He's an incredibly nice and man who truly cares about teaching. But his class and his PBL method are just bad. He's horribly misguided in his idea that students learn best through group work. Basically, it's like communism- the best students carry the worst students and everyone gets the same grade.

PBL was invented by lazy professors who don't want to teach and therefore make up a fancy name for a teaching technique where you supposedly learn from real life case studies in groups. Well guess what, If you're in a group with idiots you dont learn. Dr. Whiteis definitely overrated so it is my duty to lower his rating.

Let's just say it is a hard class. Lots of work, especially for the case study problem. It is impossible to study for the exam, cuz you either know it or you don't. Dr. White is a good guy, just is really a hard prof.

PBL is a way to make the students "interested" in the class, which means, you're on your own a lot. Work your butt off to learn.

PBL is a great way to learn. He makes you work for it, but then you retain everything that much more. Tests are difficult, more logic than knowledge. If you honestly enjoy CHEM/BIOCHEM then you will enjoy the class. GO TO CLASS!

not a bad class i guess except the 8am part of it with mandatory attendence. heavy workload and expects a lot but grading is pretty lenient if youre looking for the B range.

PBL class. 8AM sucked but got to work in groups. He knows SO much and you really learn alot if you do the work. If you go to calls on time everyday you will be on his good side. There is NO way to study for the exam.

Excellent teacher! Cares a lot about his students and is always there to help you. He used the problem based learning method of teaching in this class effectively. He's my favorite chem professor, and this class is a favorite as well.
