She's perpetually late to class, and once she arrives will take up another 10-15min of class time explaining why she's late. If you don't follow her arbitrary "guidelines" to a tee, you'll be penalized on your papers. If you ask her a question to get clarification, she'll chastise you in front of the whole class.

A lot of people don't appreciate Hazel Reid for what she is. She is brilliant and she is just the best. Yes, it seems she is unclear, but she's not incompetent. She is unclear on purpose so that you work for what she presents to you. She gives you her opinions, but then shows you a larger social context. She lets you speak, but she will speak back.

Professor Reid is a very eccentric professor. She's very passionate about what she teaches. At first the readings seemed intimidating but the way we review the readings in class allows you to understand each literary period and the concepts. The work load isnt too intense as long as you are consistent. Stay on top of it and you'll do well.

Comment:
Professor Reid is a very knowledgeable scholar and education professional with a sincere passion for teaching and for imparting the history of African American experience. I feel that she might be misunderstood by being strict with her students but she always wants the best for them and is willing and able to help on a one-on-one basis.

NOT GOOD. Professor Reid doesn't know how to use Blackboard to post assignments online, refuses to accept email submissions, makes you feel really stupid for asking questions or for sharing an opinion that is not her own, always late to class, does not adhere to syllabus, and wanders off topic. I changed my minor because she ruined it for me.

This professor lacks clarity and punctuality. Worst professor I've had at the 3 universities I've been to thus far. Her attention span is short and so it's rare that the class stays on topic often turning more to her opinions and beliefs, religious and otherwise, rather than the written works. You've been warned:)

The WORST professor I've had at Hunter, by far. Got an A but felt like I wasted my time. Material is fascinating but she doesn't get to it because she's always late for class, takes 10-15 minutes to figure out how to work the laptop. God forbid you ask questions, because she tells you she's running out of time and shouldn't have to answer that.

Always late, never prepared (googles things in front of you), assigns a ton of work, doesn't grade more than half of it and is harsh with the rest esp. if you don't follow her arbitrary standards and refuses to clarify. Spent WAY more time on a soap box than going over Lit. Lives in a fantasy land where this class will transform you.

If you want an organized professor, do not even take her. she-s always off topics, classes do not cover the syllabus or are always late on dates and scheduled discussions. she's often late for class and doesn't respect the office hours... it's a mess to follow her, it looks like she lives on another planet. too much disorganized and fly.

Prof: Reid. She is very creative and very involving in class discussion. Reading selections got me to understand how cultural, economic & historical shape and transform the lives of African American and their literature. It was an eye opening to me because now I am more aware and understand much better about African American's culture

Most inappropriate, unprepared and horrifyingly ignorant professor. She spends 90% of the class on venting her own political views and professing in favor of conspiracy theories against the African-American population. Get a BLOG and do it there and not in class that we have to pay $800+ for! Do not take her!

I'm interested in this subject, but we don't cover it in class. Assignments are clear, but I feel sorry for anyone who has never done literary analysis before b/c she offers no help or explanation. Class consists of anecdotal rambling, and occasionally reading aloud from the (really great) textbook. All I've learned in here has been on my own time

This class has been a source of pure upset, stress and at times straight-up shock this semester. Prof has mood swings. She spent 30% of class talking about personal and religious views. Asked for cash to pay guest speaker, then revoked request when students complained to department. Asked students to make copies. Always forgetting important items.

Condescending and disrespectful. Don't bother asking questions unless you enjoy having someone roll their eyes at you. She assigns a lot of writing (apprx. 50 pages over the course of the semester) but she doesn't even read most of it. She forces you to come see her for office hours on your own time, but god forbid the time isn't convenient for her

Her class is interesting, but you must be very organized to do well. Don't take her if you work FT, or if you take several other classes, she gives tons of homework and she is very strict when she grades the papers.

Very knowledgeable but should not be a professor since she has issues with the very things that constitute being one. She shields her reluctance to help students with the whole idea that students only want to be spoon fed. Tried her best to do as lil work as poss. Took a more hist approach vs literary and it was a lit class. I came out w/a B.

Passionate, brilliant, but not good for undergrads. Would be good for seminar. No hand holding here. Unorganized for someone who wants things done a certain way. U have to read lit and understand it, will not be discussed in class. Not what I expected..disappointed.And yes she does mention this site over and over in class. Best part was textbook.
