AVOID THIS PROFESSOR WHEN YOU CAN. He doesn't know how to teach and he grades very hard. When he lectures he is all OVER the place, he doesn't really help his students. I withdrew from his class, the first time I took his test didn't do well. He gave me a negative attitude saying I was failing when I just handed in my midterm paper. AVOID.

Horrible teacher, very unorganized. Lecture is all over the place. Very hard grader, he expects you to know every detail. Doesn't care about his students.

He's a really difficult grader and his lectures are all over the place but he's a smart guy. He knows a lot about his field as well as current events. Don't take him if you don't want to do the work though - the reading and papers are really demanding and the class is heavily discussion-based.

He really wasn't that bad of a Professor. Sure, he's a tough grader who assigns a lot of reading. Why would you ever take an upper-level history or sociology course if you don't like reading and can't write? Go to class, participate, read his comments when he destroys your first paper and do what he asks. An A was easy enough for me.

Comment:
The professor jumps around the material without maintaining any historical continuity; often going from addressing periods decades apart mere minutes from each other. Moreover, he does not lecture or provide a primary text, so there is no foundation in which one might learn steadily from. I felt that he was rude, and personally disliked me as well.

In the first week of the class I got the severe impression that not only did this guy dislike me because I wasn't up on his history major pedestal but my mere presence in his noble class was a personal insult to him. On top of acting like a condescending elitist he can't lecture very well at all. I highly do not recommend this man.

The first day, he asked who was a freshman, and ppl raised their hands, and he rudely told them to get out, no freshman aloud. I'm mellow about teachers but listening to him prattle on pretentiously, his TA doing all the work, and being an obnoxious tool made me want to kick him in the crotch, or at least backhand him. Avoid. Like. The. Plague.

Unrealistic expectations. Professor has no respect for the fact that not everyone is an expert on his subject matter or a professional writer. I did the work, tried to correct his criticisims on each paper and attended class and got a C. Horrible class.

He really expect you to write like an editor. The worst professor I never have. He speaks really low, u can't hear what he says. Do not recommend to take his class.

Hie is a good teacher, and very fair. I got a C on the paper, C+ on the midterm, but I showed up every single class. My advice--show up to his class, and you'll do well. After all that I swung a B+.

If you want to waste several hours of your life and several thousand dollars in tuition money, take Bix. The man cares about publishing and research, unfortunately he forgot to care about teaching. He needs to research more and retire from teaching, he is doing an injustice to students who want to learn.

Horrible, his lectures have no point, and somehow, Modern Japanese History class turned into Iraq War Class. One class he even devoted the entire time to reading reviews for his book. This guy is unreal.

Poor, tangential lecturing; enjoys NOT lecturing on what will be covered on exams; arrogant; idea for "class discussion" actually involved students asking questions and, instead of discussing the question, he simply answered it himself, often incomprehensibly; constantly condescending and often outright rude.

If you're taking his Japanese history class all you need is the book that he wrote (go figure). Take the class pass/fail because he is a crazy hard grader and again he wrote the book so he's really anal about details. If you can't sit through an hour and a half monotone lecturing than either don't take it or pass/fail it and don't go.

I took Japanese history with him, and let me just say that P/F is a great idea. He is a ridiculously hard grader--obsessed with details. I found him nice, and his book actually reads pretty well (it's just really damn long).

is painfully unorganized and often does not know what he is doing. applies a higher standards for students' essays than he does his own. he also has a stangglehold on dissident opinion. he hears you when you talk but his mind and his opinion's can not be negotiated with. is a nice guy but a horrible teacher. unless you like the reading avoid him

Actually withdrew from the class the day before the two 7 page papers were due. He seemed like a very approachable and knowledgeable person, but the lectures were totally unorganized and he gave the midterm assignment rather late in my opinion. Most teachers are interested in quality rather than quantity, especially with first contact to material.
