Papa bear Rowlands was his nickname among students for he is extremely supportive, helpful, clear in expectations, readily available, provides you the test questions and throws in a couple of dad jokes. Best professor in the department. Take him if you can and you will not be disappointed!

Professor Rowlands is one of the most passionate professors I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students, and will go above and beyond to help you out if you ever ask for assistance. Lectures involve a lot of class involvement and are fun to go to. He has high expectations, and is not an easy marker!

This was one of my favourite classes. Ian is so easy to listen to and understand. He used material that was engaging and other resources such as newspapers, movies and the internet to help articulate. Very helpful and he wants to make sure you do well!

Prof. Rowlands is exactly what a good Uni prof should be! He's knowledgeable, approachable, funny, interesting and keeps me awake at 8:30 in the morning (which is pretty much impossible). he explains things really well, and makes boring stuff seem interesting.

Great prof! Might've been an easy course but I never got bored in his lectures. Also, he doesn't waste time in lectures but tries to keep it fun. Just do your work and get your papers proofread and you should be fine.

One of the best at U.W. Always fair. Clear in his expectations. High level of professionalism. Passionate about his field. Easy to work with as a TA. Interested in his students. Really, what more could you ask for from a professor. And his voice is not annoying! (but he does have a striking resemblance to Ray Romano). Keep it up Ian.

I took ENVS 102 and learned a ton, Ian is a great prof. I wish he has taught my ERS 218 class. Rowlands is what a university prof should be like. Boring, but smart, and fair. He is a man with no vices or bias. Go to him for help instead of the TAs...

This class is boring and Ian’s voice is loud and annoying. The tutorial make you discuss the reading, so do them. Don’t really go into any details on topics, so you don’t learn much. Lecture notes are posted online. Grades hard, but fair.
