NOT the smartest man in the world (as others have said). Only THINKS he is. BIG DIFFERENCE. A bit of a nut job. If he feels you are questioning him or his methods, gets extremely defensive & totally loses it. Yelled at me when I had questions in his office. That's right, yelled. Very cocky for sure.

Damn, this class is hard. But interesting! In class, he is very open to questions. He felt unapproachable out of class, though. For tests: know the outlines, be able to tell a story about "evolution." And, in his words: "Know everything."

Dr. Hillenius is hands down the best professor I've had at the college. That being said, 323 was the hardest class I've ever taken. He's super interested in what he's teaching-very thorough . You've got to take a lot of detailed notes-rewrite them! It helps you learn-draw the pictures. Must devote lots of time, but I feel like I REALLY learned.

This class is hard and would be with anyone teaching it. That being said, Dr. H is super interested in the subject matter and makes it understandable. He will talk fast and in amazing detail and lecture info is all you need to know for tests (never used the textbook), but he will explain concepts until you understand. Overall he's a good teacher.

He knows his stuff, but makes it hard for his students.He's merciless.I was in the top 7 in his class and still making a C.My grandmother and a friend of mine died during the semester, and he still acted like his class should be my first priority. Be prepared to spend most of your time on his class.

Okay, nothing worthwhile is ever easy. But the man is fascinating to listen to and knows his stuff. You have to put effort into his class; it is not a class where you can just breeze through it and get an A. But, you know that when you do well, you DID Darned well!

definately the smartest man alive. great professor, and probably the best biology class i've taken. has a wierd sense of humor. if you take this class you will definately LEARN, study hard though because it's a ton of material. tests are seriously in depth so know everything!

this man is too smart to be teaching undergrads. He takes the study of evolution to a whole new level that went beyond myself and the people i studied with in that class. very condescending becuase the stuff he teaches is a joke to him (no good)

I think the last rating is mistaken...Dr. Hillenius always maintains an appropriate teacher/student relationship. I had him, and he is both helpful and very fair. He is one of the few really good teachers in what can be a weak department.

the class itself is interesting, but it is very easy to find yourself lost in all the material. keep up with the notes, ask questions, and study. tests are tricky, and if you think something won't be on there, it probably will. Nice, effective professor.
