Not a class I would take or recommend, was very vague when asked for help. The content was interesting but the way it was delivered was poorly done. He shot down student answers and questions at the beginning of the semester that many stopped participating and the class was 3 hours of him talking. Didn't give clear instructions on assignments.

Lectures are theoretical and challenging, but if you do the readings and are interested in the subject, his classes are enriching. Prefers close reading to research. Take copious notes and show up. Found him somewhat curt one-on-one but not openly rude. Would rather email than talk on office hours. Expectations for assignments, final are clear.

Best lecturer I've had the pleasure of listening to in my 4 year ENGL major. Toughest marker I've had in my 4 year ENGL major. Pay attention to his lectures, it shouldn't be difficult. Don't try to push the envelope, stick to what you're taught and you'll do fine. Attendance is mandatory (if you want a decent grade) but enjoyable.

I can't say much for his grading as I had a TA mark my work, but his lectures are fantastic. The final exam was very fair and if you paid attention in lecture (or listened to them online), attended tutorials, and took good notes your should be fine. He has a great late paper policy, though watch out for response papers: due dates sneak up you!

Hits all of the notes well in lecture. He sometimes got hung up on a certain poem or excerpt for too long and had to rush the last bit of the lecture but that's fine. One of the only people who I've heard read poetry and not make me cringe. The final is fine if you attend lecture regularly and go over the exam review sheets.

One of the best professors I've ever had, his enthusiasm for the subject is so infectious and his lectures are golden. Professor Fleming is super funny, and nice to everyone. I wouldn't say this class was easy, but I only went to half the lectures and I still did ok, mostly because of his great review sheets. Most of the texts are public domain.

Every lecture was like a well-written, award-winning essay. He's frighteningly intelligent. But final exam is just his lecture material. Basically regurgitate what he has said throughout the semester. Can't talk about his marking, because I had a TA mark my essays, but I once saw him strike an entire page of an essay with his red pen :S

He is a good lecturer and prof but the material was just too difficult for me. Make sure you study his lectures and read the material, the final is based on his lectures. Marks hard on papers...

Fantastic, engaging prof with clear and accurate interpretations of material. Early Modern texts are challenging- he turns them into a cakewalk. Though the subject material becomes easier to digest and write about, your material will be critically evaluated (so, write well). Like a lot of eng. profs: he's crazy but that's good.

Engaging, knowledgeable, and quick. A smart guy who encourages interesting class discussion, but is stuck in his own interpretations. Willing to listen to alternatives but not consider them seriously. Fairly arrogant and cold in office hours. Gave good essay critiques and long, complex lectures. I learned a lot but didn't feel welcome in his class.

Do not take this class with this prof...all he does it talk about what he thinks a certain poem means...you will walk out of this course learning nothing but "flemings interpretations of poems"....i studied very hard in this class but still only ended up with a B+....plus the final is murder !!!

Very interesting lectures! I'm not a terribly big fan of poetry but his lectures were insightful and informative. The assignments were reasonable. If you need a W credit then this class is highly recommended.

Pretty good prof. but depends on how your TA is really... Make sure you take really good notes of lectures because it will be VERY useful for the final. He'll give you a study guide and just study whatever is on there. He gives one essay and has an early due date(basically a chance for you to revise your paper if you don't like your mark)
