He is a wonderful professor and the stories that he tells are super entertaining. Dont bother with the textbook because he only tests on his extra readings he posts on D2L and the pictures he shows in class. Honestly its one of the easiest classes Ive ever taken and one of the most enjoyable. Just go to class and listen to fun stories.

Hume is v knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches. Greek myth is interesting, not v hard but you MUST attend class because lectures are not posted online and he only focusses on 1 small part of the assigned readings. Must memorize every single quote on the extra sheet and basically every detail about 50+ gods/heroes to do well.

The readings in the textbook help a lot of understand what he's talking about in class. This class is a lot of memorization of quotes. He gives tones of quotes and artwork in the slides that are testable material he uses but the lecture notes are not posted online. I recommend focusing on the extra readings posted on D2L for the tests.

People who complain about him didn't show up to class lol. I didn't even buy the book, I just printed the extra readings and attended class and did fine in the exams.

Hume is very knowledgeable about the course material and is evidently passionate about his work. I took this class as an easy GPA booster but for the tests he takes quotes and has you fill in the blanks of words he has removed. Its a ton of useless memorization so it takes time to study for. If you're not a GRST major don't take a class with him.

Dr. Hume is an absolute gem of a professor. In terms of sheer knowledge on his respective topic of study, he is hands down the best professor Ive had. He just knows everything, and thats why its so easy to understand the material; he doesnt beat around the bush and makes sure you know what will be on the tests, which makes GRST209 an easy A.

The material is very interesting and you can tell he loves what he teaches, but he is just really boring and monotone. I found it hard not to fall asleep and dreaded this class.

Hume is amazing. Very passionate and knowledgeable about his topic. I LOVED listening to his stories about myth and seeing the pictures he has personally took in slides. 10/10 would recommend, just show up to class, study, and put in a little bit of the work to get a big pay off, and in my case, really enjoy what you learned.

the past reviews are exaggerating tbh! yes the tests are fill in the blank but he only ever pulls quotes from stuff he TALKED about and SHOWED in class! so if you go to his lectures and write the quotes he provides, you'll be good! you can also tell he loves the topics and is very enthusiastic about them!

i have never fallen asleep in class until i took this one. his lectures drag on and he does not bring any excitement to the material. i was very disappointed as i looked forward to taking this class. the midterms are fill in the blank, and are based off of a handful of quotes directly from the textbook when he goes over a massive amount in lectures

Okay listen. This class sucks. If you are an average person who is looking for a class that does not require an intense amount of attention DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The exams are difficult as he expects you to be able to fill in the blank of any quote from a ton of stories. The final is cumulative so it adds to the bs of this class. Take my advice

Hume has a soothing voice that makes me want to just fall asleep. Take notes of the quotes and pictures he puts in his slides as he often doesn't post them online. Tests were fill in the blank, so you need to know the quotes he goes over and the stories. Very easy course and pretty interesting content.

As interesting as grst is, I think some of the material is very dry and James doesn't do much to make it more interesting. It'd be nice if he posted his notes online because not all of us have the energy to listen closely for 75 minutes every class. His midterms and finals are fill in the blanks and short answer, multiple choice would be preferred.

Listen in lecture, make note of the quotes and pay attention to the names and places within the quotes. Take note of the pictures and the discussions that take place around them in class. He clearly knows what he's talking about and you can tell that he enjoys his job so its easy to follow his lectures.

Very passionate and knowledgable. The tests are so easy - exact quotes from notes for fill in blanks, family trees well gone over. If you don't get an A in this class you need to revaluate yourself. Hilarious, and easy to talk to outside of class. Marks efficiently, tests were given back the next week after writing them. TA's are helpful.

His lectures were really interesting, and often approached myths from different perspectives which were thought-provoking. His tests are all fill in the blanks, but if you attend the lectures, make good notes from them, & go through the readings relevant to his lectures you'll do well in this course!

Hume was a great lecturer, which made the content as interesting as it could have been. The exams are fill in the blank from quotes and family trees and image identification, however he took off marks for spelling of names. If you go to class and take quality notes and do the readings you will be fine.

Though his mildly haughty exterior might put you off at first, Dr. Hume is a good guy. He's hugely knowledgeable about the topics (I had him for both Greek and Roman Religion), very accessible outside of class, and a nice guy. Exams aren't hard and neither are the assignments. Excellent prof, solid class.
