Comment:
American Realism & Naturalism. If you are required to take this class, just sit in the back and read the books. Nagel doesn't like undergrads, he will even tell you that you are not smart enough to write the essay he assigns you. P.S. He compiled the Anthology he'll make you buy, even though all of the stories are online.

Comment:
This class was easy to make a B in, but if you actually want to learn and retain material from a helpful professor, then you should just take something else. Class lectures were moderately miserable. It's a course in memorization of characters and he is ambiguous and unnecessarily tedious in grading essays.

Nagel comes off as a bit intimidating at first, but his class is not nearly as hard as he wants you to think. We had a midterm, final, and paper. He makes a big deal about participation, but I spoke maybe twice and still made an A. To get an A you just have to read the books; the midterm/final essay questions are just basic discussion questions. He LOVES to talk about himself and name drop! Heard about his summer home in Maine twice on the first day.

I love literature, and this teacher made me hate everything we read. Every comment about his snobbiness is 100% true, and its unbearable. He grades participation but literally never lets anyone talk but himself; he gives a research paper(30% of your grade) and talks about it for MAYBE 10 minutes tops (no exaggeration, no rubric). Just don't do it

Fabulous teacher. Class is midterm, final, paper. Very knowledgeable and accomplished. Some think he boasts a lot, but you would too if you had as many accomplishments. He'll write a recommendation for those who get an A. He discusses many of the exam questions. If you take good notes, you'll write about 2.5 pages per class.

If it were not for the fact that he tends towards giving A's, it would not be worth taking his class, period. It's basically not worth it anyways. Suffering through every day of his know-it-all, name-dropping, and often repetitive lectures weighs out getting an A fairly evenly. Of course, he also assigns an anthology he helped to compile.

You need to read, go to class, and speak up so he knows you've read, but it's really not that tough. I LOVED his class. He knows so much about the books and the authors, the tests aren't too bad as long as you can throw in some details, and the final paper isn't too hard, as long as you don't put it off. Great class, I'd recommend it to anyone!

I loved Dr. Nagel's class. He was very willing to help--if you just ask him for it. I went into the class dreading it and came out with a new perspective. Tests are easy as long as you read and take good notes.

I don't know what is wrong with all these people...Dr. Nagel is great. His stories are always appropriate and interesting. I think people are just jealous they haven't lived such an interesting life. Take his class!

Narcissistic, egomaniacal prof will try to convince that you shd explore Hemingway simply because he is a Hemingway scholar. He himself justifies Hemingway's writing. Yammer endlessly about his own accomplishments or, worse, about grad students' accomplishments as if they were all because of him!

I've had him before and he is a complete egomaniac. He has a way of turning every discussion, casual or otherwise, into a monologue about his accomplishments, his interests, or the famous people he knows. Students are just objects to him. ZZzzZZzz...

Keeps discussions at a very basic level. Talks about himself a whole lot, too.
